OREM--Amber Tripp found the back of the net in the eighth minute and Utah Valley scored on an own goal in the 17th minute to give the Wolverines a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton on Monday afternoon at Clyde Field.
 
With the win, UVU evens its record at 2-2. Cal State Fullerton falls to 2-2 on the year with the loss.
 
"Closing out games was something we struggled with last year," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. I'm proud of the grit and the effort that the players put forth to hold on to the win. We came out really strong in the first half and we kept great possession. I thought Fullerton came out really strong in the second half. We just had to roll up our sleeves and that's something that we haven't consistently done. This match was an awesome hurdle for us to get over as a group. We really gutted it out. We competed and defended nine corners against a team that has already scored a number of goals this season off of corners. We're really happy with the result."
 
Tripp put the Wolverines on the scoreboard in the eighth minute as she stole the ball from a Fullerton defender and pushed the ball into the left side of the box. She then made a move to the right to move the keeper out and fired a shot into the back of the net to give UVU a 1-0 lead.
 
The Wolverines extended their lead in the 17th minute after Jocelyn Bybee stole the ball at midfield and pushed it up field to Tripp on the right side of the field. Tripp then passed the ball back to Bybee who then led the ball to Carter on the right side of the box. Carter then shot the ball towards goal but a Fullerton defender attempted to clear the ball but instead kicked it into the goal to give for a UVU own goal. The score gave the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage.
 
Fullerton was awarded a penalty kick in the 52nd minute after a foul was called in the box. Atlanta Primus was able to find the back of the net to put the Titans on the scoreboard and cut into UVU's lead, 2-1.
 
The Titans tried to tie it up in the 70th minute but Allie Jara made a spectacular save as she dove to the right to keep the Wolverines on top. Jara made another key save in the 84th minute. Jara played all 90 minutes in the box. She tallied four saves on the day.
 
UVU had nine shots, including six shot on goal. Sadie Brockbank led the Wolverines with three shots on the day, including two on frame. Tripp tallied two shots, both on goal. Heather Stainbrook, Brianna Hatch, Julianna Carter, and Amanda Mangelson each had one shot.

Utah Valley now heads out on the road to take on San Jose State and Santa Clara. The Wolverines will face SJSU on Friday, Sept. 6 before traveling to play Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 8.
