OREM—Juliana Carter's equalizing goal in the 71st minute helped Utah Valley secure a 1-1 double-overtime tie against San Diego in stormy wet conditions on Friday in front of 1,545 elementary students at Clyde Field.
With the tie, Utah Valley pushes its record to 3-5-1, while San Diego moves to 4-3-1.
"It was a wild game," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "Everything from the weather, the fans, the cards, and the goals. It was a crazy game. It was a knockout kind of battle. I don't think we played well initially in the first 20 minutes. We were very lethargic. It almost took their goal to wake us up. We then started to build some momentum and took that into the second half. We played much better in the second half. We created some good chances and we were happy to get the equalizer. San Diego is a good team."
San Diego was first to get on the scoreboard as Madison Louderback dribbled the ball towards the far corner of the field and then passed it back to a streaking Bekah Valdez in the 14th minute. Valdez then fired a shot from just beyond the top left corner of the box up to the upper right 90 and just out of the reach of UVU keeper
Allie Jara for the score.
Utah Valley scored the equalizer in the 71st minute as
Sadie Brockbank took the ball on the right side of the box and made a move past a defender. Brockbank then passed the ball into the middle of the box to Carter, who then fired a shot into the left side of the net for the goal, tying the game at 1-1.
Lightening in the area forced a 45-minute weather delay with just a couple of minutes remaining in regulation. The two teams returned to the field to play the final two minutes of regulation and then two overtime periods.
Utah Valley out-shot the Toreros 15-12 on the day. The two teams each had five shots on frame.
Amber Tripp led the Wolverines with five shots, including two on goal. Carter had four shots with three shot on frame.
Brianna Hatch,
Madeline Moore,
Megan Sullivan,
Heather Stainbrook,
Breanna DeWaal, and
Nicole Olanda each had one shot each.
Jara played all 110 minutes in the box, tallying four saves on the day. Jara pushes her record to 3-3-1 in the box this season.
Utah Valley now travels to Las Vegas to play UNLV on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (MT). The game will be streamed live on UNLV's YouTube channel.
