UVU to host La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Invitational

OREM, Utah – The Wolverines are gearing up to host the first Orem-based event, this Friday and Saturday, September 6-7 in Lockhart Arena. UVU will host a trio of opponents, including Portland State, UC Davis and in-state rival Utah.

Utah Valley will begin the slate of competition on Friday, September 6 at 12pm MT against Portland State, followed by a night cap against UC Davis at 7pm MT. UVU will then face-off against #19 ranked Utah in the last matchup of the weekend, Saturday, September 7 at 5pm MT.

Despite losses to top-ranked BYU and Marquette, the Wolverines look to Portland State first, where historically, Utah Valley has won the single matchup between the two teams. Portland State enters the weekend with a 2-1 overall record, with wins over Southern Illinois and Middle Tennessee. In the 2018 season, the Vikings slated a 5-25 overall record, with a 4-14 in the Big Sky Conference.

This weekend's matchup against UC Davis will produce a tie-breaker finish, as the Wolverines and the Aggies previously have met four times for an even 2-2 split record. In 2019, UC Davis holds a perfect 4-0 overall record, only giving up one single set against Sacramento State, and collecting wins from San Jose State, Pacific, Sacramento State and Montana. The Aggies posted a 16-12 overall record in the 2018 season campaign, with an even 8-8 conference finish.

In-state rival Utah also holds a 4-0 overall record so far in the season, defeating #7 Kentucky and #23 Cal Poly last weekend in the Utah Classic, where the Utes dropped only two of 14 total sets. Utah split evenly in the Pac 12 with a 10-10 record in 2018 and a 19-14 overall record, with a win against Denver in the first round of NCAA playoffs. Utah went on to play BYU in the second-round matchup, losing 0-3.

Three Wolverines lead the Western Athletic Conference, starting with senior middleblocker Makaila Jarema. Jarema leads the WAC in blocks with 1.80 per set to total 18 blocks so far in the season and top it off with a .333% hitting average. Jarema was also tabbed to the seasons-first WAC Defensive Player of the week accolades in the opening weekend of the 2019 season. Following suit, teammates Kazna Tarawhiti tops the WAC in kills with 58 in four total matches, while libero Seren Merrill heads the conference in the backrow with 56 digs.

All neutral site games will be broadcast on live YouTube pages and admission is free of charge. UVU's matchup against Portland State will include free admission, while night matches will charge an admission fee at the door.

UVU TV will air the in-state matchup against Utah, while the WAC Digital Network will stream the remaining UVU matches. All info and schedule times can be found on the UVU Volleyball page.
