Wolverines suffer first WAC defeat on buzzer beater

OREM, Utah – Andie Easley hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give CSU Bakersfield a 55-53 win over Utah Valley University, snapping the Wolverines' seven-game win streak. With UVU in front by one, 53-52, Jayden Eggleston tipped out an initial miss and the ball found Easley, who stunned the Wolverines with the game-winner.

The Roadrunners (12-6, 4-1) ended the game on an 8-0 run and collected two key offensive rebounds with their final five points coming on second chances. The Wolverines (8-10, 5-1) struggled from the field down the stretch, missing their last six shots. Entering the game with the WAC's best turnover rate and among the top 50 in the country, the Wolverines uncharacteristically struggled taking care of the ball. UVU finished with 19 turnovers leading to 18 second-chance points for CSU Bakersfield. The turnovers also led to 20 more attempts from the field, with CSUB finishing 21-for-63 (33.3%) compared to 19-for-43 (44.2%) from Utah Valley.

"Turnovers and, especially down the stretch, offensive rebounds. You hold them to 33% shooting but when you allow them 20 more shots, they're going to win the game. Credit to them (CSUB). They kept fighting, kept playing and hit a big shot when it mattered," said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. "We don't have time to dwell on it. We have Grand Canyon coming and have got to be ready for that. The girls are pretty frustrated, understandably. I think they have resolve and have seen what staying together has brought. From what I've seen from this team the last month and a half I think we'll come back ready to go."

Jordan Holland led all scorers with 20 points while Alexis Cortez finished with 11 and Maria Carvalho added nine. Holland enters Saturday's game just two points away from becoming UVU's eighth player to reach 1,000 career points in the program's NCAA Division I era.

Utah Valley trailed 43-41 in the fourth quarter before Cortez keyed an 8-0 run that gave the Wolverines a 49-43 lead. She hit a three and, after Carvalho scored on a driving layup, hit another from distance. The Wolverines later had a 53-47 lead after Cortez hit two free throws with 2:50 to go before the Runners began their game-ending run. Eggleston, who led CSUB with 13, scored the first five points of the run including two free throws with 1:07 to go to make it a 53-52 game.

The Roadrunners scored the game's first seven points and led 11-4 before consecutive baskets from Eve Braslis and Madison Grange trimmed it to three. CSUB led by five, 16-11, when the Wolverines closed the quarter with five straight to tie it at 16-16 after one.

The teams trade 3-pointers early in the second and had the game knotted at 19 when Miracle Saxon scored four straight for CSUB. Holland, who scored seven of her 13 first-half points in the first quarter, scored UVU's final six points of the second. She tied it with 2:52 remaining and gave the Wolverines their first lead, 27-26, on the next possession. With less than a minute to go until halftime, Holland stole an entry pass and took it the length of the court to put UVU up three. Vanessa Austin scored down low just before the clock expired and the Wolverines held a 29-28 lead at the break.

Utah Valley scored six straight to open the third quarter, two from Braslis and four from Holland, to take a 35-28 lead. Carvalho knocked down a three with 3:44 to go in the quarter to give the Wolverines their biggest lead of the game, 40-31. The Runners trimmed it back to three with consecutive treys from Ashley Austin and Andie Easley and later got within two when Jayden Eggleston hit a jumper off of an in-bound play to make it 41-39 after three.

The Wolverines will host Grand Canyon on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the UCCU Center to wrap up the two-game homestand.
