Utah Valley faces Grand Canyon on Saturday at UCCU Center

UTAH VALLEY HOSTS GRAND CANYON ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT UCCU CENTER
Fresh off a 72-58 win over CSU Bakersfield on Thursday night, Utah Valley continues play at the UCCU Center on Saturday afternoon against Grand Canyon. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (MT).

Michael V. Jacobsen will become the 29th member of the Utah Valley University Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Saturday prior game against Grand Canyon. Ironically, Jacobsen was the director of athletics at UVU for 29 years before retiring in 2013. With Jacobsen leading the way, Utah Valley made a successful — and unprecedented — jump from the junior college ranks to NCAA Division I.

Brandon Averette matched a season high with 20 points to lead Utah Valley to a 72-58 win over CSU Bakersfield on Thursday night at the UCCU Center. Averette scored his 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field, including an impressive 5 of 6 mark from long range. He also pulled down three rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Jamison Overton scored 12 points on a 6 of 10 mark from the field. He also pulled down two rebounds and dished out four assists. Isaiah White and TJ Washington also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Emmanuel Olojakpoke became UVU's single season record holder in total blocks on Thursday night in a win over CSU Bakersfield. The senior center had three blocks in the game to push his season blocks total to 72. The 72 swats breaks the UVU single season record of 71 set by Akolda Manyang during the 2017-18 season.

As of Feb. 21, Utah Valley ranks tied for 11th in the nation in total blocks with 140 swats. The Wolverines also rank 13th nationally in blocks per game at 5.2 a contest. Individually, Emmanuel Olojakpoke is ranked tied for seventh nationally with 72 blocks. He also ranks 14th in blocks per game at 2.67.

Utah Valley has played 15 games this season that have been decided by six points or less and seven games decided by three points or less. The Wolverines have lost six games by three points or less and 11 games by six points or less.

Mark Madsen enters his first season as the head coach of the Wolverines. The two-time NBA champion, former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach, and former Stanford University basketball star makes his debut season as a head coach. He is just the third head coach in UVU's Division I history. Madsen takes over the Utah Valley program after serving the past six seasons as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a two-time NBA champion as a player with the Lakers (2001 and 2002), and he played for the Minnesota Timberwolves for six seasons.
