OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University got 18 points apiece from
Jordan Holland and
Eve Braslis and won its third straight game, 74-57, over California Baptist on Thursday on Senior Night in Lockhart Arena.
Braslis and
Maria Carvalho also had double-doubles with Braslis grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with six assists and Carvalho adding 11 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, and five assists.
Madison Grange added 10 points and
Alexis Cortez finished with nine points. Cortez and Holland both had eight boards as UVU outrebounded CBU 46-33. Seniors Cortez, Holland and
Keana Delos Santos, who also knocked down a 3-pointer and dished out an assist, were honored following the game.
"I'm just really happy for these seniors. CBU's a team they haven't beaten so to do it at home, on Senior Night and in the fashion that we did. To see them find success after an up-and-down year, this was a perfect way to send them out at home," said UVU head coach
Dan Nielson.
Holland buried a corner three on the game's first possession and the Wolverines raced out to a 10-3 lead just over two minutes into the game. Carvalho scored five straight including a three to give UVU a 17-6 lead with 4:12 to go. That three started a string of UVU hitting four of the next six from the field and resulted in a 12-2 run to end the quarter. The Lancers were just 3-for-16 in the opening quarter of play and Utah Valley led 24-8 after 10 minutes.
The Wolverines (12-14, 9-5) came up empty on three straight possessions to start the second and the Lancers chipped away, scoring the first six points to make it a 24-14 game. Lexy Ram hit a three with 2:58 left to get CBU (13-15, 4-9) within seven, 29-22. Braslis scored the last four points of the half to help push the lead back into double digits, 33-22, at the break.
Holland led all scorers with 12 at halftime, while Braslis and Carvalho both had eight. California Baptist was just 8-for-33 (24.2%) and UVU had a 28-18 edge on the glass in the first half.
Both teams shot the ball well early in the third. UVU quickly stretched the lead to 15 but CBU made 6-of-10 during a 13-3 run and the lead was trimmed to five, 42-37. Braslis scored and Cortez hit a 3-pointer to push the lead right back to 10, 47-37, with under four minutes left in the quarter. Following a timeout, Carvalho hit her third triple of the game and
Madison Grange hit a long two and Utah Valley led 52-37 after a 10-0 run. CBU scored seven of the final nine points in the quarter to get it back to a 10-point game, 54-44, after three.
After Tiena Afu scored to start the fourth for CBU, the Wolverines went on a 9-0 run to take their biggest lead to that point, 63-46, with 5:24 left. Utah Valley would lead by as much as 19 in the final quarter.
Ram had 15 points to lead California Baptist and Delacy Brown added 14. Afu, who prepped at Riverton High School and is from Sandy, Utah, had nine points and nine rebounds. The Wolverines limited the Lancers to just 7-for-28 (25%) from three after CBU hit 15 3-pointers in the prior meeting this season.
The win is the first for UVU against California Baptist, who had won the three prior meetings, and also gives Utah Valley at least one win over every conference opponent this season. The nine wins in league play is also UVU's highest win total since joining the WAC in 2013. Utah Valley wraps up the WAC regular season on the road next week at Kansas City (March 5) and Chicago State (March 7).
