UVU drops thriller in OT, 82-80, at Seattle U

SEATTLE, Wash. – Utah Valley lost an overtime thriller, 82-80, on the road at Seattle U in the Redhawk Center. The loss extends the Wolverines streak to four straight losses and drops UVU to 8-13 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. The Redhawks improve to 10-12 on the year, including 4-5 in WAC play.
 
Seattle U tied the game in regulation with a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to force the extra period. After the Wolverines took the lead with under a minute left in overtime, the Redhawks hit a three with six seconds remaining to steal the win.
 
Jordan Holland knocked down a jumper to start the game before Seattle U hit a pair of threes to take a 6-2 lead with 8:22 to go in the first quarter. The Wolverines then went on a 14-2 run to push its lead to 16-8 with 2:08 to go in the quarter. The Redhawks closed out the opening quarter with an 8-2 run, cutting the Wolverines' lead to 18-16 after the opening frame.
 
Keana de los Santos hit a three and assisted on another to extend its lead to 24-16 a minute into the second quarter. After both teams exchanged baskets, UVU held Seattle U scoreless for just under six minutes as part of a 7-0 run, pushing the lead to 36-23 with 1:31 to left in the half. The Redhawks scored an and-one layup before the end of the half as the Wolverines took a ten-point lead into intermission, 36-26.
 
Both teams went back and forth to start the second half before Josie Williams went on her own 7-0 run to extend the lead to UVU's biggest of the night, 45-30, with 6:46 to go in the third quarter. Seattle U chipped away at the lead, using a layup with four seconds left in the quarter to bring the Redhawks within six, 54-48 going in to the fourth quarter. After Seattle U trimmed the lead to 60-59 with 5:49 left in regulation, Eve Brasilis and Williams spurred a 9-4 run to push the lead back out to 67-61 with 1:38 remaining. After a Maria Caravalho made free throw with two seconds left, the Redhawks drew a foul and knocked down both foul shots to tie the game up. Holland missed a layup at the buzzer as the game went to overtime. 
 
After both teams exchanged free throws, Megan Jensen scored four-straight to give the Wolverines a 75-70 lead with 3:25 left in overtime. Seattle U responded with a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 79-75, with 1:37 remaining. Holland hit a three to give the Wolverines its final lead of the game, 80-79, with under a minute to go. Both teams came up empty on their next possessions before the Redhawks hit a shot from deep with six seconds left to give it an 82-80 lead. After calling a timeout to advance the ball, UVU was unable to get a shot off on its last possession, as the horn sounded on an 82-80 loss.
 
The Wolverines shot 40.3 percent from the floor while Seattle U shot 42.9 percent from the field. UVU knocked down 24-33 free throws but gave up 11 threes to the Redhawks. Utah Valley won the battle on the boards, 40-34, but 17 Wolverine turnovers led to 28 points for Seattle U.  
 
Williams led the Wolverines with 23 points on 8-11 from the field to go along with seven rebounds. Holland added 14 points and seven rebounds of her own and Carvalho chipped in 12 points to go along with a team-high four assists and five steals. Brasilis scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Alexis Cortez pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Utah Valley returns home to take on UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 pm M.T. in Lockhart Arena. The game will be broadcasted on the WAC Digital Network. The Wolverines then welcome the Aggies of New Mexico State on Saturday, February 15. Tip is set for 2 pm M.T. in the Lockhart Arena and will be broadcasted on the WAC Digital Network.
