DENVER -- Utah Valley University opens the 2020 WAC Tournament on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT against Seattle University at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The game is the third of four quarterfinal contests on Wednesday.
The Wolverines (12-15, 9-6 WAC) are the number two seed, its highest seed in the tournament, after recording their best finish in league play since joining the WAC in 2013-14. Seattle U (12-16, 6-9) is the No. 7 seed. The two teams split the season series with each team winning on its home court.Â
In the first meeting, on Jan. 11 in Orem, the Wolverines won 70-58 behind 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from Maria Carvalho while Jordan Holland added 15. The Redhawks picked up an 82-80 win in overtime on Feb. 8 in Seattle. Utah Valley led by 10 at the half but Hailey Vice-Neat hit two free-throws to force overtime and hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left in the extra frame for the win. Josie Williams had a career-high 23 points for UVU and Kamira Sanders scored 25 for the Redhawks.Â
On Monday the conference announced it's All-WAC teams, and the Wolverines were represented by first-teamer Holland and Carvalho's second-team and All-Defensive team selection.Â
The Wolverines are 2-6 all-time in the WAC Tournament, including 0-2 against Seattle. Wednesday marks just the second time that UVU will go in as the higher seed. The first time was as the No. 4 seed in 2016, a 61-53 win over No. 5 Kansas City.Â
