TULSA, Okla. – Kimball Bastian and
Tate Orndorff have both advanced to the consolation semifinals and a total of five Utah Valley University grapplers will look to earn podium finishes at 2020 Big 12 Championships at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
The fourth-seeded and eighth-ranked senior Bastian (174 pounds) avenged an opening-round loss by winning a pair of consolation bouts on Saturday evening to advance to Sunday's consolation semis, while the top-seeded and fourth-ranked heavyweight
Tate Orndorff fell in overtime in the semifinals to enter Sunday's consolation semis as well. Freshman 149-pounder
Cameron Hunsaker and senior 197-pounder
Tanner Orndorff both wrestled their way to respective 2-2 outings on the day to enter seventh-place matches on Sunday, while junior 133-pounder
Taylor LaMont went 1-2 and will look to force a true eighth-place match on Sunday.
Four of the five Wolverines also have the opportunity to punch auto bids to the 2020 NCAA Championships as well on Sunday in Bastian,
Tate Orndorff,
Tanner Orndorff and LaMont.
Following a dominant 11-3 major decision victory over South Dakota State's Blake Wolters in the quarterfinals earlier in the day, UVU's lone 2020 semifinalist
Tate Orndorff met up with the No. 5 seed and 17th-ranked Brian Andrews of Wyoming. Tied at 1-1 at an escape apiece, the contest headed for overtime. After a scoreless opening sudden victory period, both sides then each earned escapes in the first set of tiebreakers to make it 2-2. After another scoreless sudden victory stanza, Andrews then made his move with an escape and a takedown in the second set of tiebreakers to take a 5-2 lead. Later in the bottom position,
Tate Orndorff then responded with a quick escape, but Andrews fought off a late Orndorff shot and turned it into a takedown of his own to win by a score of 7-3.
Tate Orndorff (17-3) will now face the No. 3 seed and 11th-ranked Josh Hokit of Fresno State in Sunday morning's consolation semis.
After falling in the quarterfinals earlier in the day, the two-time UVU NCAA qualifier and No. 4 seed
Kimball Bastian responded by earning a tightly contested 2-1 decision over South Dakota State's Cade King to move on in the consolation rounds. With the contest tied at 1-1, riding time proved to be the difference as the eighth-ranked Bastian had secured over a minute of riding time to pull out the 2-1 win. In his second match on the night, Bastian then looked strong by earning a 6-1 decision over the No. 8 seed Cody Surratt of Air Force. Holding to a 3-0 lead after two periods of action, the three-time Big 12 Conference placewinner Bastian secured his fourth Big 12 podium finish with another takedown and an additional riding time point to lock up the 6-1 victory.
Bastian (16-7) will open against the No. 3 seed and 11th-ranked Sam Colbray of Iowa State in the consolation semis on Sunday.
Following a 1-1 opening session, the three-time UVU NCAA qualifier and sixth-seeded
Tanner Orndorff kept his 2020 Big 12 Championship alive with an 8-3 win over Northern Iowa's Isaiah Patton to move on in the consolation rounds. Tied at 2-2 after two, the Wolverine senior made his move with a pair of takedowns and a two-point nearfall to seal the 8-3 victory. In his second match of the night, the 21st-ranked
Tanner Orndorff then found himself on the wrong end of a 10-2 major decision to the No. 7 seed and 22nd-ranked Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado to head to Sunday morning's seventh-place match.
Tanner Orndorff (14-11) will match up against the No. 8 seed from North Dakota State Cordell Eaton. With a win, the UVU senior could potentially force a true sixth-place match with six auto bids to nationals in his weight class.
After going 1-1 in session number one, the freshman
Cameron Hunsaker also recorded his second win of the tournament by pulling out a 3-1 overtime win over Air Force's Dylan Martinez. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Hunsaker wasted no time getting things going as he quickly took Martinez down just seven seconds into the opening sudden victory period to avenge an earlier season loss to the Falcon foe and move on. Then in his second match of the night, the Wolverine freshman found himself on the wrong end of an 8-0 major decision to the No. 5 seed and 13th-ranked Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado to enter the seventh-place bout.
Hunsaker (10-16) will match up with the No. 7 seed Jaden VanMaanen of Air Force on Sunday.
After being upset in a tightly contested 6-4 bout in the quarterfinals, the top seed and 10th-ranked
Taylor LaMont (133) then found himself in another battle against the No. 7 seed and 19th-ranked Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma State in the consolation rounds on Saturday evening. Trailing 3-1 in the second, LaMont picked up a penalty point via stalling to make it 3-2. He then earned a quick escape in the third to knot the match up at 3-3. With the 2018 NCAA qualifier LaMont on the attack throughout the majority of the final period, Witcraft was credited a controversial last-second takedown to claim the bout, 5-3, and send LaMont into a battle for ninth to force a true eighth-place bout since there are eight auto bids to nationals at 133 pounds.
In his first match for ninth later in the evening, LaMont responded with a second period fall over South Dakota State's Zach Price in 4:42 second to move on to Sunday. LaMont (15-7) will open on Sunday against the No. 5 seed and 16th-ranked Todd Small of Iowa State in hopes of forcing a true eighth-place match.
Five other Wolverine grapplers all had their 2020 Big 12 Championship runs come to a close with 0-2 showings in
Josiah Nava (125),
Kainalu Estrella (141),
Jed Loveless (157),
Koy Wilkinson (165) and
Ashton Seely (184).
As a team, UVU sits in 11th place out of 12 teams with 29 points. The 11th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys lead the conference championship event 111.5 points, while No. 21 Iowa State is in second with 92 points and NO. 16 Northern Iowa is in third (90.5).
Sunday's third session of the 2020 Big 12 Championships will continue at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT. Consolation semifinals, as well as third, fifth and seventh place matches will take place during the session and will be streamed on ESPN+. The championship finals will then be held on Sunday at 5 p.m. MT/6 p.m. CT and will be televised live on AT&T Sportsnet in Utah as well as a number of Fox Sports Regional Networks around the country.
