Utah Valley shuts out California Baptist on Senior Day, 1-0

OREMHeather Stainbrook scored the game winner in the 17th minute and the Utah Valley defense picked up its ninth shutout of the season as the Wolverines defeated California Baptist 1-0 on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Clyde Field. UVU seniors Brooklyn Nielsen, Breanna DeWaal, and Amber Tripp, were honored in a ceremony prior to the match.

senior dayThe win is the third straight victory for the Wolverines and extends UVU's unbeaten streak to four games. Utah Valley improves to 10-5-2 overall and 5-1-2 in WAC play. California Baptist falls to 6-8-2 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.

"The best part about today was our three seniors leaving Clyde Field with the win," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "The entire team wanted to come in and put in a performance to honor them. It wasn't the prettiest, but we did what did what we had to do to get the result."

Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute after Julianna Carter sent the ball into the box from the left side where a California Baptist defender tried to clear it out. Sadie Brockbank blocked the attempted clear and quickly settled the ball before sending a cross to Heather Stainbrook on the right side. Stainbrook then fired it into the back of the net to give the Wolverines the first score of the match. The goal is the eighth of the season for Stainbrook and the 14th of her career.

The Utah Valley defense earns its ninth shutout of the season and its eighth shutout victory of the year. She had three saves against the Lancers. Nielsen picks up her 10th win and sixth solo clean sheet of the season. She also has three combined shutouts.
