OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University couldn't overcome first-half deficit, dropping a 2-1 decision to Seattle University on Saturday night at Clyde Field in WAC men's soccer.
The Wolverines fell to 5-3-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the WAC while the Redhawks, who scored both goals in the game's first 24 minutes, improved to 7-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.
Declan McGlynn scored first, the 12th minute, on assists from James Morris and Levonte Johnson. Morris took a pass from Johnson and delivered a one-touch feed to McGlynn, who settled it and scored from 10 yards out.
Johnson scored the second goal 12 minutes later, taking a pass just past midfield and going all the way on his own, weaving through a trio of defenders and chipping it in from nine yards out. Seattle U led 2-0 at the half.
Utah Valley got its goal in the 67th minute, on an own goal.
Min Kang fired a cross into the box and the attempted redirect by a SU defender on a header ricocheted into the goal to make it 2-1.
The Wolverines had a pair of good lucks during their attempt at an equalizer, but Akili Kasim recorded two of his three saves over the final 13 minutes of regulation. Kasim kept an
Aaron Nixon header out of the goal in the 77th minute, and in the 87th minute made a diving save on a strike from distance by
Cameron Weston. Utah Valley was credited with 17 shots but just three were on goal while Seattle U got three of its five attempts on frame.
The Wolverines will play one more time during the current homestand, next Saturday night, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. MT against UNLV.
