Wolverines come up short at Nevada

RENO, Nev. — Maria Carvalho and Madison Grange both set a new career-highs in scoring but Utah Valley University came up short at Nevada, 70-64, on Saturday at Lawlor Events Center.

Carvalho, whose previous high was 23 points, scored 19 of her new high 26 in the first half and finished the game 6-for-7 from the 3-point line. Grange finished with 17 points, 10 in the second half, and Josie Williams added 14 points and nine rebounds, making six of her seven attempts from the floor. Nevada (1-2) also had three players in double figures, led by Audrey Roden's 17 points off the bench. Nia Alexander added 15 and Da'Ja Hamilton scored 12 for the Wolf Pack.

Utah Valley (2-2) was 7-for-15 from beyond the arc in the opening half, but made just 2-of-11 in the second half. The Wolverines shot 60.9% in the first half (14-for-23) and finished the game at 52.1% (25-for-48) while Nevada was 44.8% overall (26-for-58). UVU turned it over 15 times and Nevada capitalized, scoring 21 points while the Wolf Pack turned it over just seven times in the game.

After UVU scored 42 points in the paint in the Tuesday's win at SUU on Tuesday, Nevada was intent on limiting UVU's inside game. Early on that worked as Utah Valley hit just one of its first six from three to begin the game. Carvalho got going midway through the first, knocking down her first 3-pointer of the game to give UVU an 8-3 lead. Grange followed with a three of her own and Carvalho connected on two more triples with the Wolverines making four of their last five attempts in the quarter. UVU led 19-15 after one with Carvalho scoring 11 in the first.

Nevada tied the game at 19-19 before a quick 7-0 spurt put Utah Valley in front 26-19. Carvalho hit a jumper, Tahlia White scored after an offensive rebound and Carvalho added her fourth 3-pointer of the half. The Wolf Pack responded with eight straight points to take their first lead of the game, 27-26, but Josie Williams answered in the post and Carvalho hit another triple to make it 31-27 in favor of UVU. Utah Valley led 35-31 at the half.

UVU maintained its lead for much of the third and held a 51-47 advantage after Grange buried a 3-pointer with just under two minutes remaining. Nevada closed the quarter with seven straight points, with five of those coming from Hamilton, to take a 54-51 lead in the fourth.

The Wolf Pack scored the first four points of the fourth, on two free throws and a Natalie Lathrop second chance bucket to extend the run to 11-0 and give Nevada a 58-51 lead. Williams scored inside for two to stop the run but the Wolf Pack took its biggest lead, 62-53, after Lathrop and Nia Alexander both scored buckets.

Grange scored on running layup on a nice feed from Williams to start an 8-0 UVU run. Williams followed with a layup, Kayla Anderson got a steal, and Carvalho found Grange on a great pass down low for a reverse layup to make it 62-59. Another Nevada turnover led to another bucket in the paint from Williams and UVU was within one, 62-61, with 4:02 left.

The Wolverines were limited to just one free throw over the next three minutes as Nevada extended it to a 67-62 lead. Williams scored to cut it to three with 21 seconds left to get UVU within three, but Utah Valley would get no closer.

The Wolverines return home next week for two games in the UCCU Center. UVU will host Colorado Mesa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before a Saturday match up with Portland State at noon.
