Strong defensive effort helps UVU to 62-43 win

OREM, Utah — Megan Jensen and Madison Grange had career scoring nights while Josie Williams and Kayla Anderson also set new highs statistically in a 62-43 win over Portland State University on Saturday in the UCCU Center.

Jensen scored 14 of her game-high 19 in the second half while Grange finished with 18 and hit all four of her attempts from three. Williams added 17 points and set a new career-high with 19 rebounds and Anderson had a career-best nine assists. UVU (4-2) assisted on 21 of 24 made field goals.

Jensen, Grange and Williams combined to score 54 of the team's 62 points and shoot 21-for-30 from the field; Williams was 7-for-9, Grange 5-for-7, and Jensen hit 9-of-14. The Wolverines had a 49-30 edge on the glass and held the Vikings (3-2) to just 24.4% (15-for-59) from the field.

"Defensively, the girls were really focused on their preparations this week, and everybody stepped up today," said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. "I'm really happy for the girls and hopefully can build on this as we get ready for a really good UNLV team next week."

UVU scored the first six points of the game — all by Williams — and later notched eight straight to turn a 6-4 lead into a 14-4 advantage. Grange hit her second three of the quarter with just over two minutes to go and Maria Carvalho knocked down a 3-pointer with 25 seconds on the clock to give UVU a 20-9 lead after one. Williams had seven points and seven rebounds in the quarter.

In the second, the lead hovered between as many as 12 points and as few as eight, with the Wolverines carrying a 30-20 lead into the break. Williams had 13 points and 12 rebounds by halftime.

UVU led 32-22 early in the third when an 11-0 spurt extended it to a 43-22 lead. Jensen scored six points during the run, which was capped by a Eleyana Tafisi floater in the lane. The Vikings later scored seven straight to get within 14, 45-31, but would get no closer. The Wolverines carried a 53-37 lead into the fourth. Utah Valley put the game away midway through the final quarter, with Jensen and Grange combining to score six straight to take a 62-39 lead with 3:58.

Saturday's win gave Utah Valley a 4-3 lead in the all-time series and was the first game between the programs since 2009. It also improved the Wolverines to 2-0 against Big Sky Conference schools so far this season, with three more road games to go. Up next, the Wolverines host UNLV next Wednesday at 7 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center.
