Utah Valley advances to WAC Tournament semifinal with 6-1 win over Sam Houston

ABILENE, TexasSadie Brockbank scored two goals and fired a season-high 15 shots to lead the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 6-1 win over Sam Houston on Wednesday night in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Elmer Gray Stadium.

"I thought it was the reaction that we expected coming off the result we had on Saturday," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. "We definitely wanted to make a statement. We understand that this is only one win and now we need to focus all our energy on Friday. I thought we looked hungry to get to goal tonight and we put the ball in dangerous areas a number of times and because of that we were obviously able to put up six."

Nicole Olanda gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as she fired a shot from the top of the box that deflected off a player and into the right side of the net. The goal is Olanda's first of the season and the second of her career.

The Wolverines went up 2-0 in the 16th minute after Olanda dribbled the ball toward the middle of the field and sent a pass to Brockbank who had set up position in the box. Brockbank turned and fired a shot with her left foot up and out of the reach of the Sam Houston keeper for her eighth goal of the season.

With just 39 seconds to play in the first half, Ashley Hughes won a ball on the right side of the field and dribbled past a pair of Sam Houston defenders towards end line and lofted a cross into the box. Breanna Eves jumped up and headed the ball into the goal to give UVU a 3-0 advantage into halftime.

Sam Houston's Summer Knox got the ball just inside the box and sent a shot that bounced off the cross bar and into the net to cut into the UVU lead, 3-1, in the 54th minute.

Amber Tripp sent a pass to Brockbank on the right side of the box in the 27th minute. Brockbank attacked her defender and made a move to the right and then sent a shot off the far post and into the back of the net to extend the UVU lead to a 4-1 advantage. The goal is the ninth goal of the season for Brockbank and her second two-goal game of the season. The goal ties Brockbank with Jenni Clough (2005-08) for the top spot on UVU's all-time goals scored list (26). Brockbank is also now tied with Clough as the all-time UVU points leader with 71.

Utah Valley went up 5-1 in the 71st minute after Tripp passed the ball off to Julianna Carter on the right side of the field. Carter then beat her defender and dribbled the ball just inside the box and crossed it to Tripp, who blasted a shot off from the top of the box into the net to help extend UVU's lead.

The Wolverines scored a sixth goal in the 77th minute after Manthy Brady faked a cross near the right side and beat her defender to the middle of the box where she sent a shot with her left foot toward the left post and into the back of the net for her first goal as a Wolverine.

Utah Valley outshot Sam Houston with a season-best 33 shots, including 14 shots on frame. Brockbank led UVU with a season-high 15 shots, including five on goal. Brady had three shots, while Eves, Nicole Ray, Carter, Tripp, and London Miller each had two shots. The Wolverines had six corner kicks. Brooklyn Nielsen led the Wolverines in the box with two saves.

Utah Valley advances to the semifinals where the Wolverines will take on Southwest division champion Stephen F. Austin. The match will take place on Friday at 6 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
