IRVINE, Calif. — Utah Valley University finished off the WAC regular season with a 2-1 win at California Baptist on Friday night and are now set for their opening-round contest in next week's WAC Tournament.
Jojea Kwizera scored the game's first goal and also assisted on the game-winner, which came from
Mateo Palomino.
The Wolverines finished the WAC regular season at 6-4-0 in league play and are 9-5-2 overall. The Lancers, playing the final contest of the season, finished 11-4-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the WAC.
With just over 21 minutes remaining in regulation, Kwizera scored in the 69th minute to put UVU in front 1-0, with James Peña assisting on the goal. The goal was Kwizera's fourth of the season, tying him for second on the club with
Diego Castillo and
Evans Armah.
The Lancers answered less than four minutes later when Thomas Beecham scored with Jordan Lane assisting. Palomino's goal — the freshman defender's first of his career — came in the 77th minute on Kwizera's nine assist of the season, which tied him for the WAC lead.
The Wolverines finished with 17 shots, seven on goal, while CBU finished with 15 shots, three of which were on frame. UVU goalkeeper
Jason Smith collected a pair of saves while picking up the win.
Utah Valley will play in the WAC Tournament quarterfinals next Wednesday at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix as the No. 5 seed in a game that starts at 4:30 p.m. MT. UVU's opponent, and the full tournament bracket, will be released following play on Saturday night.
