WOLVERINES DRAW SPARTANS IN WAC QUARTERFINAL
Utah Valley University is the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 San José State in the first match of the 2021 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday from GCU Stadium in Phoenix. The game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. MT and will air on ESPN+ in the United States and on the WAC Digital Network for international viewers outside of the U.S.
This marks the sixth tournament appearance in eight seasons for Utah Valley. The Wolverines are in search of their first tournament title and have gone 2-3-3 all-time in the tournament. UVU is 1-2-0 all-time in three WAC quarterfinal matches.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley University finished off the WAC regular season with a 2-1 win at California Baptist. Jojea Kwizera scored the game's first goal and also assisted on the game-winner, which came from Mateo Palomino. Kwizera was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, receiving the honor for the first time in his career.
SECOND HALF SUCCESS
Utah Valley has scored 30 goals on the season, with 20 of those coming after halftime. The ratio is even bigger during WAC play with 15 of the team's 19 goals in conference play coming in the second half.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
San José State (9-6-3, 7-2-2) fell 2-1 at Seattle in its regular season finale with the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye on the line. The Spartans own a 4-3-1 record all-time against Utah Valley with the four wins coming in the last four meetings between the teams. SJSU defeated UVU 1-0 earlier this season in Orem and Wednesday is the first time the teams will meet in the WAC Tournament.
