Wolverines begin Texas trip Friday at UTRGV

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University heads to the Lone Star state to wrap up the WAC regular season starting with contests on Friday and Saturday at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Wolverines and Vaqueros will meet in Friday at 6 p.m. CT/5 p.m. MT and Saturday at 3 p.m. CT/2 p.m. MT.

UVU (8-5) will then close out the regular season next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2-3, at Tarleton in a make up of a series that was postponed in January. The Wolverines are currently in a three-way tie for second place with Grand Canyon and Seattle U at 6-4 in WAC play. GCU and SU meet in Phoenix this weekend.

The Wolverines are led by Josie Williams' 14.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while Maria Carvalho is averaging 13.3 points per contest. Williams ranks fifth in the WAC in scoring, leads the conference in rebounding and is fourth in field goal percentage at 53.2%.

LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines are coming off of a series split with New Mexico State in the final home games of the season last weekend. The Aggies edged UVU 65-62 on Friday before Utah Valley rebounded with a 56-47 victory on Saturday.

Down one entering the fourth quarter on Saturday, UVU outscored NM State 18-8 in the fourth and didn't allow the Aggies to score for over six minutes to begin the quarter en route to the win.

Shay Fano finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Josie Williams added 15 points and 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead UVU. Nehaa Sohail also finished with 10 points and eight boards to round out three Utah Valley players scoring in double figures.

ABOUT UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
UT Rio Grande Valley enters the weekend at 5-10 overall and 1-5 in WAC play and split two games last week at Seattle U. The Vaqueros got 31 points — on 7-for-7 from three — from Jordan Lewis in an 84-74 win on Friday. UTRGV made 15 3-pointers in the win. Amara Graham leads the team and ranks third in the WAC at 16.1 points per game, with Sera Bershers right behind her at 15.4 per contest.
