HERRIMAN, Utah—
Sadie Brockbank recorded a brace with a pair of first half goals, including the game winner, to lead the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout win over New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon at the Zions Bank Training Center in Herriman, Utah.
The Wolverines improve to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in WAC play, while New Mexico State falls to 3-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.
"I thought we played well on Thursday and then to come back and do it again against the same team on Saturday is big," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "We had a strategy and a game plan and things we wanted to accomplish on the weekend, and we did that. We've created a lot of chances already this season, but this weekend we were able to finish and get six goals and concede zero."
Sadie Brockbank got the Wolverines on the scoreboard in the 17th minute after receiving a lead pass from
Julianna Carter near the top of the box. Brockbank fired the shot with her left foot towards the right far post for the score, giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines scored just four minutes later in the 20th minute as
Anna Pickering raced the ball down the field on the right side and sent a cross into the box where Carter got a foot on it and passed to Brockbank inside the box on the right side. Brockbank gathered it and fired a shot, which was blocked. She then sent the rebound into the left side of the goal past the keeper for the score to secure her brace and a 2-0 advantage for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley's Tripp dribbled down the field and into the right side of the box where she centered a ball to
Julianna Carter, who punched it over the outstretched arm of the NMSU keeper for the score in the 66th minute. The goal is Carter's second goal of the two-match series against the Aggies. The goal gave the Wolverines a 3-0 cushion.
Carter was fouled in the box as she had an open look at the goal as she tried to separate herself from a defender. The Wolverines were awarded a penalty kick and Tripp converted for her first goal of the season in the 75th minute to give UVU a 4-0 advantage.
Utah Valley outshot the Aggies 18-8, including a 10-3 advantage on goal. The Wolverines had 10 corner kicks to NM State's six.
Brockbank led UVU with six shots, including a match-high three on frame. Tripp, Pickering, and
London Miller each had three shots.
Isabel Jones-Dawe was credited with the win in the box, playing the first half without giving up a goal. She also had a pair of saves.
Brooklyn Nielsen played the second half with one save.
Utah Valley continues WAC play next week at UT Rio Grande Valley on March 4 and 6 in Edinburg, Texas. The Wolverines will then return home to take on California Baptist on March 11 and 13 at Clyde Field.
