ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Wolverines hit the road to take on in-state rival and WAC-newcomer Dixie State, in Burns Arena, on Monday and Tuesday, March 1-2, in St. George, Utah. Monday's match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. MT and Tuesday's contest will start at 12:00 p.m. MT. UVU and DSU will be renewing the Old Hammer Rivalry with this week's series. The two schools have met only one time since UVU became D1 with Utah Valley winning 3-0 on Sep. 22, 2006, in Orem, Utah.
Dixie State is from St. George, Utah, and calls the Western Athletic Conference home. The Trailblazers went 20-8 overall a season ago and 14-4 in RMAC play. DSU is in its first season in the WAC and was picked to finished tied for sixth in the preseason WAC poll. The Trailblazers are currently 6-5 on the year, including 5-5 in WAC play, and are led by two-time first team All-RMAC and 2018 All-American senior right-side hitter Megan Treanor, sophomore libero Mykenna Nelson, and junior outside hitter Whittnee Nihipali.
The Wolverines swept last week's series with WAC-foe, Chicago State, in Lockhart Arena. UVU took the first match over the Cougars, 3-0, behind
Jaysa Funk Stratton's career high five aces. In the rematch, the Wolverines swept CSU again, 3-0, behind a season-high 17 total blocks. The 17 blocks is tied for the most UVU has ever had in a three-set match. The only other time that has happened was in a 3-0 sweep of CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 26, 2017. The Wolverines also set a season-low in opponents hitting percentage, holding Chicago State to -0.027, marking the first time since Oct. 26, 2017 that UVU has held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage and is the lowest hitting percentage an opponent has had since Chicago State had a -0.065 percentage on Sep. 29, 2016.
The Wolverines return home to take on WAC-leading New Mexico State in Lockhart Arena on March 8-9. The Aggies are 8-0 on the year, including 8-0 in WAC play. Monday's match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MT while Tuesday's match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. MT. UVU will alternate road and home matches throughout the conference season and contests will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays. The following week, Utah Valley hits the road for its final road trip of the season, taking on WAC-foe UT Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas on March 15-16.
