LOGAN, Utah — Devyn Cretz struck out a career-high nine batters and
Linnah Rebolledo drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning as Utah Valley University edged Utah State University, 2-1, on Tuesday at Johnson Field.
Cretz (6-8) allowed just four hits, with her only blemish a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. The senior right-hander has thrown complete games in each of her last eight starts. She retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning, punctuating her outing — and the game — with strikeout number nine. The win helped UVU (12-16) snap a five-game losing streak and — with the three of those coming by single runs — had the Wolverines reverse the string of finishing on the wrong end of those one-run contests.
With the game tied 1-1 in the seventh, the Wolverines rallied with two outs and nobody on for the decisive run.
Basia Query singled to right-center and then scored from first when Rebolledo doubled home pinch-runner
Jaeden Barajas.
The game was scoreless through five, thanks to a diving catch in right by
Jade Miller. With two outs and a runner at second, Miller kept a run off the board, stealing a hit from Gabby Jimenez toward the line in right.
UVU's first run came in the sixth.
Rien Milliken led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and, after a walk to
Siena Sandoval, scored on a sacrifice bunt from
Kyla Hardy.
That lead was short-lived though, with Lexi Orozco tying the game with a solo home run to left to start the bottom of the sixth. Query had two of Utah Valley's six hits in the game while Orozco and Zaia Castruita had two hits each to account for the Aggies' four hits in the game. The teams are scheduled to meet one more time this season, on April 21 in Orem.
The Wolverines now head to Riverside for a three-game WAC series California Baptist beginning Friday.
