SJSU spoils comeback bid with Golden Goal

OREM, Utah — A golden goal late in the first overtime spoiled the debut of interim head coach Michael Chesler and Utah Valley's comeback attempt as the Wolverines fell to San José State, 3-2, on Wednesday at Clyde Field.

The Wolverines (1-3-0) trailed 2-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining but got two goals, including the equalizer on a Zahir Vazquez penalty kick in the 78th minute, to force extra time. Vazquez nearly ended the game with just over three minutes in the overtime but SJSU goalkeeper by David Sweeney got just enough of his hand on the ball to see it trickle just outside the post. Finlay Wood scored the game-winner for the Spartans with less than 90 seconds to go until the end of the first extra frame.

"We are gutted with the result tonight, but we learned a lot about the group," said Chesler. "I thought we responded extremely well after going down two goals. We played attractive and entertaining soccer at times and need to fine-tune a few things as we prepare for Houston Baptist on Monday."

The game included eight cautions — five on SJSU — including two on Eduardo Miranda, the second of which game in the 94th minute. That forced the Spartans to play a man down the rest of the way.

SJSU got a first-half goal from Nicolas Brenes in the 17th minute and made it 2-0 in the 69th minute on a Willy Miranda goal.

UVU caught a break in the 72nd minute when the Spartans tried to clear a ball in their own 18, but the ball went back toward the goal mouth, where another SJSU player deflected it in for an own goal. Vazquez' penalty kick came after Aaron Nixon was fouled inside the box with just under 13 minutes to go.

Utah Valley finished with 17 shots, with 14 of those coming after halftime with four on goal. San José State had 13 shots, five of which were on goal.

The Wolverines are next scheduled to face Houston Baptist next Monday night in the final road contest of the season.
