LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Brooke Carter tossed a shutout as Utah Valley University downed WAC foe Seattle U in the second of two games at the Boyd Gaming Classic at UNLV on Friday. The Wolverines (5-5) dropped a 3-1 decision to Idaho State earlier in the day.
Against the WAC's preseason favorites,
Kyla Hardy drove home two runs with a base hit in the bottom of the first inning, and a throwing error allowed Hardy to score in the fourth to account for all three Utah Valley runs. In the meantime, Carter allowed just five scattered hits with two of those coming to begin the game for the Redhawks (6-10). She stranded both runners in scoring position in the first.
In the bottom of the inning,
Basia Query singled and moved to second after
Siena Sandoval walked. Two batters later,
Aubree Hogan walked to load the bases before Hardy's hit plated both Query and Sandoval.
Carter retired the last seven hitters of the game to pick up the win and notch the second shutout of her Wolverine career. Hardy finished 2-for-3 while
Jade Miller, Query and
Peyton Prigge all had hits for the Wolverines.
In the first game of the day, errors proved costly in the 3-1 setback to the Bengals (3-2). All three ISU runs that scored came in unearned against UVU starter
Devyn Cretz; one in the first and two decisive runs in the fourth.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Miller and Query had consecutive hits to begin the inning, and
Linnah Rebolledo later drove in Query with a base hit into left-center to tie the game.
After the Bengals got the two runs in the fourth, starting pitcher Mareen Ramirez did the rest. She didn't allow a base runner of the final 4.1 innings, retiring 13 straight to end the game.
Query had two of the team's five hits in the game, while Miller also had a hit to extend her on-base streak to 27 games, dating back to the second game of last season. She's reached base in 28 of her 29 games played at UVU.
UVU continues play tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. PT/1:30 p.m. MT rematch with Idaho State and will also face host UNLV at 5:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. MT.
