PROVO, Utah — Utah Valley University dropped a midweek contest at BYU, 8-2, on Wednesday at Gail Miller Field.
Basia Query had a two-run double for the Wolverines, but the Cougars (22-13) had four home runs and three doubles as seven of their 11 hits went for extra bases. Query and
Jade Miller both went 2-for-3 to lead the way for the Wolverines (15-20).
Huntyr Ava got BYU on the board in the first with a three-run home run, her eighth of the season. The Cougars got a solo home run from Alyssa Podhurcak in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, Miller singled and
Linnah Rebolledo won a long plate appearance with a walk. Two batters later, with Rebolledo at second and
Rien Milliken at first, Query delivered a clutch, two-out double to score both runners and make it 4-2.
Rylee Jensen, who doubled earlier in the game, hit a solo home run for BYU in the bottom of the fourth to push to get one of those runs back and make it a 5-2 contest. Marissa Chavez added a two-run shot in the fifth for BYU. The Wolverines and Cougars will meet one more time this season, on Tuesday, April 27 at 4 p.m. in Orem.
Utah Valley is now set to host Dixie State in a three-game WAC series beginning Friday at 2 p.m. MT in a doubleheader in the first games between the old junior college rivals at the NCAA Division I level. The series finale is Saturday at noon with the series part of the Old Hammer Rivalry between the in-state foes.
