LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to top Utah Valley University, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon to earn a series sweep and remain atop the WAC standings with three games left to play.
Linnah Rebolledo hit a three-run home run for the Wolverines (20-25, 5-10) in the third inning to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. With two down and the bases empty,
Jade Miller hit a ground-rule double and
Emery Nielson an infield single before Rebolledo hit a no-doubter to left for her seventh home run of the season. Rebolledo, who started the day tied for fourth in the WAC in runs batted in, now has 38 on the season.
The Aggies (27-18, 12-3) tied it in the fifth with a single run, but UVU again rallied after there were two outs and nobody on to retake the lead in the sixth.
Laynee Betancur singled and
Karleigh Olsen walked before Miller singled to right to drive in Betancur and make it 4-3.
That lead was short-lived though, as Maya Martinez led off the bottom of the inning with a game-tying home run. The Aggies took the lead on a Hailey Tanori double, and she later scored on a wild pitch to give NM State an insurance run.
Nielson, Betancur and Miller each had two hits for Utah Valley while Hope Banales, who scored what turned out to be the game-winning run, went 3-for-3 for New Mexico State.
The Wolverines will play their final non-conference game of the season on Sunday at UTEP at 11 a.m. MT. The Miners are led by former UVU head coach TJ Hubbard.
