SEATTLE — Utah Valley University dropped its second game of the 2021 WAC Softball Tournament, 5-1 to Seattle University, and will now play an elimination game later Friday evening against New Mexico State. The Redhawks advance to Saturday's championship with the win.
Seattle U starter Carly Nance went the distance in the circle and also hit two solo home runs en route to the win. Her first home run broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth and her second began a string of five straight one-out hits during a three-run sixth inning that extended the lead to 5-1.
The Wolverines (24-27) got a run in the bottom of the first when
Siena Sandoval walked with the bases full and two down on a close 3-2 pitch.
Emery Nielson, who led off the inning with a single on the first pitch of the inning, scored.
The Redhawks (28-19) scratched out a run in third, with back-to-back one-out singles from Mekenzie Madokoro and Alyson Matriotti. Ally Choate later flared a two-out single to left that scored Matriotti and tied it at 1-1.
Nance didn't allow another Wolverine hit until Nielson collected her second of the day to lead off the fifth, but she was stranded at second to end the inning. Nance walked six, three of which came in the first inning, but also struck out six while limiting Utah Valley to just three hits. Nielson had two of the hits while
Linnah Rebolledo collected the other.
