EDINBURG, Texas –Â
Aaron Johnson and
Andre Jones led the UVU men's and women's track and field team to a second-place finish in the 2021 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Edinburg, Texas. The women's team finished in fourth place, falling just short of a bronze finish. Â
Â
Johnson was named the most Outstanding Track Performer, along with winning the High Point Award, marking the consecutive seasons that the Wolverines have won both of those prestigious awards.
"The WAC Championships went really well this year," said Utah Valley head track and field coach
Scott Houle. "Albert winning his third-straight triple jump championship and Andre winning his fourth-straight hurdle championship were great highlights for us, not to mention
Aaron Johnson winning the overall athlete of the meet. We had some great overall performances and a lot of PRs even with the interesting weather, tornado warnings, and the rain. It was a great way to end the season and we bring back almost every one for next season and now we just wait to hear back about the entries for the NCAA prelims."
On the men's side, Johnson won both the 100m and the 200m dashes, finishing with times of 10.53 and 21.28, respectively. Jones won both the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdle runs for the second-straight season, with times of 14.183 and 52.32. Jones, the only Wolverine to win both of those events in the same season has now done it in back-to-back WAC Championships.
Â
Albert MacArthur took gold in the triple jump, becoming a three-time WAC champion with his jump of 15.60m.
Tyson Green won the 5000m run, finishing with a time of 14:19.31.
Zane Farrer finished as a close second-place finisher in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, behind Jones in both, with times of 14.189 of 52.35.
Seth Krauss took the bronze in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.01m and the men's 4x100m relay team took bronze with a time of 41.30.
Â
On the women's team,
Julia Hunt and
Secret McEuen took silver and bronze in the 100m dash with Hunt finishing with a time of 11.96 and McEuen clocking in at 12.05.
Becky Swanson and
Maria Blad took silver and bronze in the 400m hurdles with Swanson finishing with a time of 1:02.02 and Blad clocking in at 1:03.01. The women's 4x100m relay team took the silver, finishing with a time of 46.17 and the 4x400m relay team took bronze with a time of 3:51.7.
