OREM, Utah — Senior
Basia Query delivered a walk-off, two-run home run to lead Utah Valley to a series sweep of Tarleton with a 9-1 win in five innings on Saturday afternoon. Query, in the final home plate appearance of her career, also became the program's career hit leader, with the 202nd of her career.
The Wolverines (23-26, 8-10) won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, which included a 10-8 decision earlier in the day. In that game, Query was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. The game-ending home run in game two also extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
"These five years have meant everything. Utah Valley has been the greatest home away from home. I've learned so many things: how to better myself through the coaching changes and learn from each of them, how to be there for my teammates, and to learn to become a leader," Query said. "I've put everything into softball. It's been my life and I'm going to miss it so much. I'm proud of myself, proud of my teammates and thankful for my coaches and my family."
In game one, Tarleton (17-36, 5-12) scored three quick runs with both Georgia Capell and Morgan Medford driving in runs with first-inning doubles. Query got one of those runs back with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, scoring
Linnah Rebolledo. Rebolledo later tied the game in the third with a no-doubt home run, her eighth of the season.
The Texans added a run in the fifth on a RBI base hit off the bat of Hallie Saintignan, but Utah Valley responded with five in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-4 lead.
After
Jade Miller doubled, Rebolledo and
Rien Milliken both walked to load the bases. Query then doubled past third to give the Wolverines a 5-4 lead.
Kyla Hardy later drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run while
Madison Carr and
Emery Nielson also drove in runs in the fifth. UVU took advantage of four walks and an error in the inning.
Tarleton scored a single run in the sixth before
Siena Sandoval hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning for what turned out to be two big insurance runs. The Texans got a two-out, three-run home run from pinch-hitter Alexis Hoang to make 10-8, but
Devyn Cretz got a pop out to Hardy at second to end it and earn her fourth save of the season.
Katie Zuniga earned the win in the circle, lasting 5.2 innings and allowed four earned runs while striking out two without allowing a walk.
The Texans finished with 12 hits in the game, three coming from Bailee Riggs. In addition to Query's three hits, Miller and Rebolledo both had two-hit games, with Rebolledo going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. She scored eight runs in the series.
The Wolverines trailed 1-0 in the third inning of game two before putting up another crooked number with a seven-run third to take control of the game.
Peyton Prigge singled and then scored when Carr tripled her home. Nielson followed with a walk and Miller drove in Carr with an infield single. Later in the third,
Kyla Hardy put an exclamation point on the inning with grand slam right down the line in left.
In the fifth, Rebolledo led off with a walk before Query delivered her sixth home run of the season — and 21st of her career — to give UVU its first series sweep in WAC play this season.
Brooke Carter struck out seven and allowed just one run on three hits in earning the complete game win. For Tarleton, Medford had the lone RBI on a third inning double.
Seven players were honored following the game. In addition to Cretz, Miller, Milliken, Query, and Sandoval,
Jordan Adams and
Kaycie Jensen were also recognized in a postgame ceremony.
Utah Valley will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in next week's WAC Softball Tournament, which begins Thursday in Seattle. The tournament bracket will be released later on Saturday afternoon.
