SPRINGVILLE, Utah – The Utah Valley University women's golf team posted a 10th-place finish out of 17 teams at the season-opening Hobble Creek Fall Classic on Tuesday at Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville.
UVU carded rounds of 299, 305 and 315 to record a 67-over-par 919 and finish in the top 10 at the season-opening event. By placing 10th, the Wolverines finished ahead of in-state and WAC foe Dixie State (924), CSUN (928), Montana State (932), Idaho State (938), UT Rio Grande Valley (940), Portland State (944) and CSU Bakersfield (959).
"It was a struggle today and disappointment to finish our final round as we did. But after a rocky start today, everyone battled to finish strong, including senior,
Bailey Henley, who finished with back-to-back birdies," head coach
Juli Erekson said. "I'm also very happy for
Lauren Taylor's performance this week with a top-13 finish.
"It was a great first tournament of the year building awareness. We have some work to do but have so much to build from and that's what we're looking forward to next week in Coeur d'Alene."
Playing the event as an individual, sophomore
Lauren Taylor had the best outing by placing 13th with a 7-over-par 220. After opening with a 4-over 75 on Monday morning, Taylor responded with rounds of 73 and 72 over the final two rounds to record the top-15 finish. During Tuesday's final round, Taylor carded an eagle on the par-4 7th hole as well as 14 pars.
Senior
Bailey Henley was UVU's top team finisher by tying for 26th with a 13-over-par 226. Henley opened her senior campaign with Utah Valley's best round of the tournament with an even-par 71 on Monday and followed that up with scores of 76 and 79 to finish at 13-over. Freshman
Leighton Shosted was next for the Wolverines by tying for 38th with a 17-over-par 230. In her first collegiate event, Shosted posted scores of 75, 75 and 80 to tie for 38th.
Reigning NCAA qualifier
Victoria Estrada followed for UVU by tying for 45th with an 18-over 231 (76-77-78), followed by sophomores
Macy Robertson Murphy in 49th (77-77-78—232) and
Makenzie McMillen in 90th (83-82-82—247). Playing as individuals, sophomores
Anna Lesa and
Caylyn Ponich placed 63rd (82-73-81—236) and 67th (77-77-83—237), respectively.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs won the Hobble Creek Classic with a 19-over-par 871 (291-294-286), while Cal Poly and Weber State tied for second at 31-over-par (883). Boise State was next by placing fourth (890), while Seattle U finished fifth (893), Northern Arizona sixth (896), Wyoming seventh (903), Southern Utah eighth (911) and Northern Colorado ninth (914).
NAU's Kimberlee Tottori claimed medalist honors with an even-par 213 (72-71-70), while Weber State's Taitum Beck (74-71-69) and Gonzaga's Chaewon Baek (70-72-72) tied for second at 1-over-par.
The Wolverines will next hit the road to take part at Gonzaga's Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational this weekend. The 54-hole/three-day event will run Sept. 19-21 at CDA Resort Golf Course in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Following the event, UVU will head to Washington for Seattle U's Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational on Oct. 11-12 at Tacoma Country & Golf Club.
