OGDEN, Utah – Career nights by several Wolverines wasn't enough to top in-state rival Weber State as Utah Valley dropped a five-set heartbreaker, 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 11-15) in the Ogden. UVU outblocked WSU, 22-12, marking the first time in over seven years that an opponent has totaled more blocks than the Wildcats in a match.

With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 1-4 on the season as the Wildcats improve to 5-2 on the year.

Weber State got off to a quick start in the opening set, scoring the match's first four points. After the Wolverines scored the next three points, both teams would alternate the next 10 points as the Wildcats maintained a 9-7 advantage. WSU used a 5-2 run to push its lead to 14-9, but
Jules Fink led Utah Valley on a 9-4 surge to retake the lead, 18-17. Following a pair of points by the Wildcats, UVU used a 4-1 run to extend its lead to 22-20. Weber State countered with three-straight points to pull ahead, 23-22. Both teams battled back and forth, but the Wildcats scored the final two points of the set to take the first set, 26-24.

WSU took an early 3-1 lead but
Kazna Tanuvasa led the Wolverines to three-straight points to take a 4-3 advantage. Following a 4-1 run by the Wildcats, UVU countered with a 5-2 surge to retake the lead, 10-9. Both teams went back and forth until the
Bryton Bishop and
Sadie Hamson led a 12-3 explosion to put the Wolverines up 23-14. WSU was unable to challenge from there as Utah Valley took the second set, 25-16, to tie the match up at 1-1.

The Wildcats again got out to an early lead, taking a 3-1 advantage in the third set. UVU rallied, using a 5-2 run to take the lead, 6-5. Utah Valley pushed its lead out to 10-7 before the Wildcats countered with an 8-4 surge to retake the lead, 15-14. After both teams exchanged points, the Wolverines rattled off five-straight points to push its lead to 20-16. WSU used a 5-2 run to battle back, but UVU finished the set scoring three of the final four points to take the third set, 25-22, to take a 2-1 advantage.

Weber State opened up the fourth set scoring the first three points, but UVU countered with three-straight of its own to knot the set up at 3-3. After a 4-0 surge by the Wildcats, Utah Valley used 5-1 run to tie the set back up at 8-8. Neither team was able to separate from the other before a 6-1 run by Weber State push the lead out to 19-14. UVU made a final push, scoring three-straight points, but WSU finished off the set with a 6-2 run to take the set, 25-19.

The Wildcats surged out to an 11-4 lead in the deciding set.
Kristen Bell came alive in the final set, leading Utah Valley on a 5-1 rally to cut the deficit to 12-9. After a pair of WSU points put UVU on the brink, 14-9, the Wolverines scored back-to-back points to bring Utah Valley within three before the Wildcats finished off the set, 15-11, to take the match 3-2.

Tanuvasa led the UVU offense, finishing with 27.5 points on 23 kills, a pair of aces, eight digs, and four blocks. Fink finished with a career high 11 kills to go along with three blocks and Hamson added 10 kills and a team-high six blocks.
Abbie Miller finished with a career-high 31 assists to go along with six digs while
Ellee Boyack added a career high 13 helpers. Bishop led the backline defense, finishing with a career-high 26 digs to go along with five assists and a pair of aces.

The Wolverines continues on the road as UVU heads to Flagstaff, Ariz. as Utah Valley will participate in the Lumberjack Classic on Sep. 10-11. UVU will take on Arizona State and UC Davis on Sep. 10 in a double-header and then will take on host Northern Arizona on Sep. 11.
