EDINBURG, Texas – Madison Grange scored a career-high 24 points and hit the go-ahead three with 30.5 seconds left as Utah Valley University notched its second straight road win in WAC play, 59-56, over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Thursday night at UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Grange went 6-for-7 from behind the arc for the Wolverines (7-9, 2-3) while
Josie Williams added 21 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season and
Maria Carvalho matched her career-high with 10 assists.
The Vaqueros (6-10, 2-2) had the ball with the chance to take the lead in the final seconds but the UVU defense held and
Shay Fano knocked down two free throws with 1.8 seconds to go for the final tally.
"Winning on the road is never easy so to be able to hang on is so big for us. I'm so proud of the fight we showed," said UVU head coach
Dan Nielson. "Madison came up big for us tonight. That's a shot we want her to take if it's there and to have the kind of night she had and to hit that shot was so great to see."
UTRGV built an early 14-9 lead after a Jena Williams 3-pointer before Grange knocked down a triple to start a UVU run. The Wolverines closed out the first quarter with seven straight points, and extended it to an 11-0 run early in the second to take a 20-14 lead.
Grange went 5-for-5 from deep in the first half — with three triples in the second quarter — and had 17 points by halftime. She hit an three early in the second to give UVU a 23-17 lead. Iva Belosevic scored six of her team-high 17 points to keep UTRGV in striking distance, and Katie Kyle added a couple of late baskets to cut the UVU lead to 33-28 at halftime.
Williams won the battle in the post against the Vaqueros in the third quarter with 10 points. UVU used a quick 6-0 run including a jumper from Williams and a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 49-42 entering the fourth quarter.
UTRGV went on an 8-2 run over a 4:48 span in the fourth quarter to take a 56-54 lead with a 1:11 left after a Kyle jumper.
UVU went 9-9 at the free-throw line in the victory while forcing 18 UTRGV turnovers and capitalizing with 16 points off those turnovers.
Utah Valley will travel to face Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT/1 p.m. MT. The Wolverines are 0-1 all-time against the Cardinals, losing back in 2010. UVU will return to UCCU Center starting Monday with a 2 p.m. MT tip against WAC rival Seattle U in a rescheduled game from January 13th. Chicago State visits the UCCU Center on Thursday, January 27th, for a 6 p.m MT tipoff.
