UVU gets season-high 33 points from bench in win

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University had three players reach double figures and opened a four-game homestand with a 65-51 win over Seattle University on Monday afternoon. The Wolverines also got a season-high 33 points from their bench to move to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in WAC play and have now won three of the last four games.

Maria Carvalho led UVU with 16 points, Babalu Stewart set a new career-high with 13 points, and Josie Williams added 12 points and eight rebounds. Carvalho, Megan Jensen and Eleyana Tafisi each had three steals with the Wolverines collecting 14 as a team. Stewart also pulled down seven rebounds to help UVU to a 38-26 advantage on the glass.

"Today was probably the most complete game we've played all year, as far as the team playing together as a group," said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. "I'm really proud of the girls and their focus and to see that energy and effort was great, especially from the bench."

Down 5-3 early on, the Wolverines finished the opening quarter on a 14-4 run to take a 17-9 lead after one. UVU made four of its last five attempts from the floor with Carvalho and Williams combining for 13 of the 17 points.

The Redhawks scored the first eight points of the second to tie the game before Kayla Anderson hit consecutive jumpers — including a 3-pointer — to push it to 22-17 with 5:51 left before halftime. Utah Valley continued its spurt, closing the half on a 15-2 run and allowing just two points over the final six-plus minutes.

After Anderson's three, Carvalho and Tahlia White also hit 3-pointers with the Wolverines knocking down 5-of-11 from long range in the half. Carvalho had a game-high 10 points and UVU led 32-19 at halftime.

The lead was 12, 36-24, when Megan Jensen scored consecutive buckets and Stewart hit a pair from the line to give the Wolverines an 18-point advantage, 42-24. Utah Valley led 47-32 after three.

A 12-0 run early in the fourth put the game away, with Stewart scoring six of her points during the spurt, doing so on consecutive 3-point plays to make it 55-36 with 8:03 to go. Utah Valley converted on six more free throws during the run and led 59-36 at the 6:16 mark. The Wolverines were 20-for-22 from the line in the game and made all 10 attempts in the fourth quarter.

The Redhawks put a dent in the score with 10 straight points midway through the quarter, but never got closer than 12. McKenzi Williams led Seattle U with 10 points.

The Wolverines are now set to host Chicago State on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center. Utah Valley and Seattle U are slated to meet again on Feb. 24 in Seattle.
