UVU sweeps Utah Tech behind a strong serving night

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University defeated Utah Tech University 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) on Thursday night inside Lockhart Arena. UVU (12-7, 6-1) used ten service aces, three from Natalie Palmer and Avery Shewell, to get past Utah Tech (9-8, 3-5). The win makes UVU 7-0 all-time against Utah Tech, and the Wolverines sweep the season series for the Old Hammer Rivalry.

"We took good control and executed our game plan tonight. We worked on some things this week with serving, and it paid off tonight. I feel like we are a good serving team," said UVU head coach Sam Atoa.

Utah Valley got off to a 7-3 lead in the opening set with a 5-0 run as UVU took advantage of two blocks assists from Makayla Broadbent, with Kazna Tanuvasa and Kalea Kennedy adding one each during the run. The Wolverines set the tone defensively with eight blocks in the opening set. Broadbent had three as Kennedy added two, and Shewell, Tanuvasa, and Vagana added one.

Utah Tech used an 8-0 run in the second set to go up 15-10 before Utah Valley responded with a 7-0 run to regain the 20-17 lead and never looked back. Tanuvasa had three of her match-high 14 kills in the set, with Palmer and Kennedy adding kills. The second run closed the set for UVU with a kill from Broadbent and two UTU errors before a service ace from Ke'ilani Sedrick.

A 9-1 spurt in the third set allowed UVU to pull away from Utah Tech for an 18-10 advantage. Shewell was dominant from the service line with three service aces during the stretch. Utah Tech attempted to rally, but Shewell took the momentum back when she scored three of the four final four points, with Abbie Miller adding a service ace for the 25-19 set win.

Kennedy had seven kills on a .400 attack percentage with five of UVU's 14 blocks in tonight's victory. Palmer added 19 assists, two kills, and seven digs. Kate Hardy led Utah Tech with 10 kills on the night as strong UVU defense held Utah Tech to a .170 hitting percentage.

Utah Valley will travel to Southern Utah on Oct. 22 for a 6:00 p.m. match to close out the weekend before embarking on a trip to Texas to matchup with Tarleton on Oct. 27 and Abilene Christian on Oct. 29. The Wolverines return home the following week for the last two home matches against New Mexico State on Nov. 3 and UTRGV on Nov 5.
