Utah Valley shuts out Utah Tech for 1-0 victory in Old Hammer Rivalry

OREM — Alejandro Silva scored his first goal of the season and the Wolverine defense pitched a shutout to remain unbeaten and unscored upon at home this season, taking down the Utah Tech Trailblazers 1-0 Friday night at Clyde Field.

"A big focus for our group this year was creating a fortress here at home," said head coach Kyle Beckerman. "We feel comfortable here, but we've gotta continue working hard, because we can get better."

Jason Smith kept a clean sheet, stopping the two shots he was faced with on the night. In a match that was a defensive stalemate for much of the night, the two sides combined for just 13 shots and four shots on goal.

Silva broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. Silva weaved his way through the Utah Tech defense and fired his shot into the bottom-left corner from about 20 yards out. Silva nearly doubled the lead just three minutes later, but his free kick was parried away for a corner before it could reach the upper 90.

"Ale's such a huge player for us, even when he's not on the scoresheet," said Beckerman. "We're really happy for him and the team, and hopefully that'll be the first of many for him."

The Trailblazers were inches away from equalizing in the 41st minute, but the Wolverines were able to clear their line. Larsen Rogers' initial shot was saved by Jason Smith, and Rogers' follow-up from close range karomed off the post into Smith's arms.

Owen Knecht broke through on goal in the 67th minute, but his shot curled outside the far post. Aaron Nixon played Elijah Gozo on goal in the 81st minute, but Gozo's shot was saved by the keeper.

The Wolverines head to Las Vegas for their final road game of the season. Utah Valley will face off with UNLV on Sunday at 8 p.m. MDT. The match will be streamed on WAC International.
