OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University used a 14-1 run in the third set of a tied contest to swing the momentum of the match en route to a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17) win over Chicago State on non-conference volleyball on Thursday in Lockhart Arena.
Kazna Tanuvasa and
Tori Dorius had 13 and 12 kills, respectively, to lead the Wolverines (8-7), while
Hailey Cuff had a season-high seven kills. Yanlis Feliz had a match-high 20 kills for the Cougars (5-9).
Abbie Miller finished with 23 assists, and
Natalie Palmer added 17 to go along with nine digs, and
Bryton Nixon finished with 16 digs for UVU.
"I felt like we had better control in the match. We did that in our serving and had that 14-1 run. We did it in our hitting especially in the third and fourth. I was proud of taking care of the situations that we were in tonight," said UVU head coach
Sam Atoa.
Utah Valley trailed in the third set, 11-8 before five straight points eventually turned into the decisive 14-1 run. After CSU stopped the initial spurt to make it 13-12, Dorius had a kill that began nine straight serves from Nixon, who had a trio of aces during the run.
The Cougars were able to score four straight to get within six, but the Wolverines ended the set 25-17 after a Tanuvasa kill and a CSU attack error.
Utah Valley took an early lead in set four, turning a 3-1 CSU lead into a 9-3 advantage. Tanuvasa started the run of eight straight points with a kill and had three during the stretch. The lead reached as much as eight points, and the Cougars were able to get back within four, 21-17, but the Wolverines finished it with four straight points to win the set 25-17 and end it.
Utah Valley took the opening set behind Dorius and
Kalea Kennedy, who combined for nine kills while hitting .500. With the set knotted at 15-15, Chicago State scored three consecutive points to take an 18-15 lead. The Wolverines responded with four straight points to start a decisive 10-4 run to end the set. Palmer had back-to-back aces to break a 20-20 tie, and Kennedy later finished off the opener with a kill on a Palmer assist.
Set number two was just as tight as the opener, with neither team leading by more than three points. Utah Valley led 19-18 when CSU scored three in a row to take a 21-19 lead and force a timeout. The teams traded points before Whitney Barnes helped the Cougars tie the match at one set apiece. She had two kills and assisted on a block with Mesalina Severino over the final four points of the set for the 25-22 final.
The Wolverines took a quick break from WAC play to face the Cougars, their former longtime conference foe dating back to the Great West Conference days. Chicago State had been members of the WAC until becoming a DI Independent this season.
