RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University defeated Utah Valley University 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-20) on Thursday night inside Van Dyne Gym in Riverside. CBU (11-13, 6-7) used seven service aces to hold the momentum as UVU (16-9, 10-3) could not rally after down, despite 35 CBU errors in the match.
Utah Valley used a 4-0 run in the opening set to bring the set to an 11-11 tie after two of CBU's 35 errors in the match, along with kills from Dorius and Shewell. The Lancers responded later with a 4-1 run to go up 18-15. The Wolverines and Lancers traded points until UVU had match point at 25-24 when CBU rallied with three straight points to win the opening set.
The Lancers started to pull away and went up 23-17 until UVU responded with a 5-0 run in part due to three CBU errors to make it 23-21 CBU. The Lancers scored the next point before
Caleigh Vagana had a kill and a CBU error made it 24-23. Christine Graff had one of her match-high 15 kills to close out the set for CBU.
The Wolverines got off to a quick start in the third set and led 5-2 with three Dorius kills and a kill from
Kazna Tanuvasa.
Makayla Broadbent had back-to-back kills later to go up 11-5. A 4-0 run with two kills from
Hailey Cuff and a pair of
Abbie Miller service aces put UVU ahead 16-7. The Wolverines put the set away with four errors from CBU and a kill from Cuff.
The Lancers used an 8-2 lead to pull away from UVU in the fourth set. Utah Valley used a 4-0 run early in the set to get back to 9-6 after a kill from
Kalea Kennedy. The Wolverines climbed within one at 11-10 before CBU scored eight of the next ten points to take control of the set.
Utah Valley was led by Dorius with 11 kills in the match, with Tanuvasa adding nine and Cuff adding four off the UVU bench. Vagana set a new career-high with 11 blocks in the match.
The Wolverines wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Grand Canyon. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. MT first serve from GCU Arena. The match will be available on ESPN+.
