UTAH VALLEY TO TAKE ON MORGAN STATE ON FRIDAY NIGHT AT JERSEY MIKE'S JAMAICA CLASSIC
Utah Valley travels to Montego Bay, Jamaica to compete in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic, Nov. 18 and Nov. 20, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. The Wolverines will open play at the tournament on Friday, Nov. 18 against Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference foe Morgan State (1-3). Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. (MT)
The Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic features eight teams from eight conferences around the nation. The participating teams include Georgetown, Loyola Marymount, Wake Forest, LaSalle, Wisconsin Green Bay, Morgan State, Queens University, and Utah Valley. The Wolverines will be playing in the Rose Hall side of the bracket where they will take on Morgan State in the first round and then play either Wisconsin Green Bay or Queens University on Sunday, Nov. 20.
Justin Harmon scored 19 points and Le'Tre Darthard added 18 to lead Utah Valley in a heartbreaking 68-65 overtime road loss to ACC foe Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Trey Woodbury knocked down a clutch shot to tie the game, 65-65, with three seconds left on the clock in overtime. Wake Forest's Tyree Appleby then hit a shot from three to give the Demon Deacons the 68-65 overtime win.
Through four games this season, Aziz Bandaogo leads the Wolverines in scoring at 12.8 points a game, followed closely behind by Trey Woodbury at 12.3 points a contest. Bandaogo also leads the team on the boards, pulling down 11.3 rebounds a game. Le'Tre Darthard and Justin Harmon are nearing double figure scoring at 11.5 points per game apiece.
Utah Valley returns eight players, including three starters from last year's team that won 20 games. Starters Le'Tre Darthard, Blaze Nield, and Tim Fuller return to the squad. Last season's sixth man, Justin Harmon, also returns for his junior season. Jaden McClanahan, Tim Ceaser, and Jordan Battle return this season.
Trey Woodbury was named to the WAC's preseason All-WAC team by both the coaches and media. The Las Vegas native earned All-WAC honors in 2020-21. He returns for his senior season after leading the Wolverines in scoring at 15.6 points per game during the 2020-21 season. He was sidelined last season with an injury, but came back to play in UVU's two WAC Tournament contests in Las Vegas.
Utah Valley was picked to finish seventh by the coaches and eighth by the media in the WAC preseason polls.
Mark Madsen enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wolverines. The two-time NBA champion, former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach, and former Stanford basketball star led his team to its first 20-win season since 2018. He also guided the Wolverines to just its second WAC regular season title in 2010--the team's first championship since 2014. He is just the third head coach in UVU's Division I history. He was a two-time NBA champion as a player with the Lakers (2001 and 2002), and played for the Minnesota Timberwolves for six seasons.Â

ABOUT MORGAN STATE
Morgan State enters Tuesday's matchup against Utah Valley with a 1-3 record. The team has dropped two straight since picking up a 130-49 win over Penn State Allegheny in the team's lone home game of the year. The Bears fell 69-54 at VCU before dropping a 65-59 decision at Akron on Tuesday. Senior guard Isaiah Burke led Morgan State with a game-high 18 points with four shots from long range in the road loss at Akron. Senior Malik Miller also scored double digits with 10 points. Miller, who led the team in scoring last season, is second on the team in scoring this year at 12.5 points a game. Miller leads the team in rebounding and assists, pulling down 9.3 boards and dishing out 4.75 assists a game. Burke fronts the team in scoring at 14.0 points a contest. As a team, Morgan State is averaging 79.0 points while limiting opponents to a 69.8 points per game average. Morgan State returns five letterwinners and one starter from last year's team that went 13-15 overall and finished 7-6 in league play. The Bears are coached by Kevin Broadus who is in his fourth season with the team.Â
SERIES HISTORY VS. MORGAN STATE, MEAC
Utah Valley and Morgan State will meet on the basketball hardwood for the first time. Friday's game against the Bears will mark the seventh time that Utah Valley has played an opponent from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. UVU last played an MEAC opponent on Dec. 22, 2012 with the Wolverines taking a 73-67 loss at home to North Carolina Central.Â

The 2022 roster of teams includes Georgetown, Loyola Marymount, Wake Forest, LaSalle, Wisconsin Green Bay, Morgan State, Queens, and Utah Valley. The Wolverines will open the tournament on Nov. 18 against Morgan State. UVU will then play either Queens or Wisconsin Green Bay in the next round on Nov. 20.Â
