Utah Valley falls in overtime to Morgan State, 73-72

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica—Aziz Bandaogo scored 18 points with eight rebounds, while Le'Tre Darthard and Justin Harmon also scored in double figures to lead Utah Valley in a 73-72 overtime loss to Morgan State in the first round of the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic.

The loss is the second straight overtime setback for the Wolverines who fall to 2-3 on the season. Morgan State improves to 2-3 on the season.

Trailing by one point, 73-72, with 0.9 seconds remaining in overtime, Utah Valley's Darthard took a shot from beyond the arc and a foul was called. The officials then took a review of the shot and determined that the clock did not start on time and that Darthard's shot would have taken place after the clock had expired.

Utah Valley shot 34.5 percent (20-58) from the field with a 16.7 percent (4-24) clip from long range. Morgan State hit a 45.9 percent (28-61) mark from the field, including 36.8 percent (7-19) from three. Utah Valley outrebounded the Bears 43-33

The two teams played to a 12-12 tie through the first eight minutes of the game. Morgan State then used an 11-3 run to jump out to an eight-point, 23-15, lead with seven minutes to play in the first half. MSU then took its largest lead of the game, 33-23, with 3:12 on the clock. The Wolverines then outscored the Bears 9-2 over the final three minutes to cut the Morgan State lead to just three points, 35-32.

The Wolverines opened the second half with a 7-3 run culminating in a Bandaogo dunk that gave Utah Valley a 39-38 lead with 15:56 to play. The two teams then played through one tie and three lead changes over the next five minutes with the Bears taking a 46-45 lead at the 11:21 mark. The teams then played even the rest of the game, playing through eight ties and 10 lead changes to a 68-68 tie to force overtime.

In overtime, Morgan State outscored Utah Valley 5-4 and Darthard's last second attempt where a foul was called was called off because of a timing malfunction as the Bears secured a 73-72 win.

Bandaogo scored his team-high 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field and a 5 of 6 mark from the free throw line. He also pulled down three rebounds with five blocks.
