Wolverines clinch spot in WAC Tournament with 2-1 comeback victory on Senior Night

Box Score

Nico Torres and Mark Andros both scored in the final 15 minutes of play to cap off a dramatic come-from-behind victory for the Utah Valley men's soccer team, clinching a spot in the WAC Tournament with a 2-1 win over the California Baptist Lancers Friday at Clyde Field.

The Wolverines came into Friday's match needing at least a point to clinch a spot in the WAC Tournament, and secured their spot with Andros' 88th-minute tie-breaker. The win also clinches Utah Valley's first-ever undefeated home campaign, finishing 5-0 in 2022 at Clyde Field.

"The boys showed their character to stick to our game style and get a comeback win," said head coach Kyle Beckerman. "I'm really pleased with where this group is right now and we'll shift our focus to winning the WAC tourney."

Before the game, Utah Valley honored its four graduating seniors — Easton Embley, Samuel Krommenhoek, Aidan Dayton, and Nico Torres — with a pregame ceremony. Former Wolverine Jojea Kwizera was also on hand as the Wolverines celebrated his accomplishments donning the green and white.

Utah Valley peppered the CBU goal in the first half, but had nothing to show for it. The Wolverines forced Lancer keeper Nolan Premack into six saves in the opening 45 minutes and out-shot CBU 18 to 4 on the night.

The Wolverines had a pair of chances in quick succession in the 19th minute, but both were turned away. Alejandro Silva's initial shot was saved by Premack at the far post. The rebound was pounced on by Owen Knecht, whose shot was cleared off the line by a Lancer defender at the near post.

Aaron Nixon came inches from a goal in the 25th minute, but his shot was pushed away by Premack just before it could cross the goal line.

The Lancers struck first in the 38th minute off the foot of Bryan Iliohan.

Silva hit the woodwork off a free kick in the attacking third in the 68th minute. Silva assisted on the equalizer in the 75th minute on a corner kick. Torres rose highest in the penalty area and headed it into the upper 90.

Andros found the winner in the 88th minute to put the Wolverines in front for good. Elijah Gozo took the ball to the byline before sending it back too the top of the penalty area for Andros, who sent a one-timer into the bottom-left corner of the net.

CBU had one last shot off a set piece with three seconds remaining, but the free kick was dealt with easily by Jason Smith

The Wolverines will await the results of tomorrow's WAC games to determine who their next opponent will be in the WAC Tournament quarterfinals. The WAC Tournament will begin on Wednesday in Riverside, Calif. on the campus of California Baptist. All matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
