Utah Valley opens season at Utah State on Monday night

UTAH VALLEY OPENS 2022-23 SEASON AT UTAH STATE ON MONDAY NIGHT
  • Utah Valley opens the 2022-23 season on the road as the team travels north  to Logan to take on Utah State on Monday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
     
  • Utah Valley returns eight players, including three starters from last year's team that won 20 games. Starters Le'Tre Darthard, Blaze Nield, and Tim Fuller return to the squad. Darthard ranked fourth on the team in scoring at nearly 10 points a game and led the Wolverines with 44 buckets from long range. Nield averaged 6.9 points and led the team in assists at 3.8 per game. Fuller averaged 6.8 points and pulled down 4.4 boards a game. Fuller also ranked second in the WAC and led UVU with a 58.1 percent mark from the field.
     
  • Justin Harmon returns for his junior season after ranking second on the team in scoring last year at 10.0 points a game. Jaden McClanahan (3.7 ppg., 2.0 apg.), Tim Ceaser (3.5 ppg., 3.8 rpg.), and Jordan Battle (0.8 ppg., 1.1 rpg.) also return this season.
     
  • Trey Woodbury returns for his senior season after leading the Wolverines in scoring at 15.6 points per game during the 2020-21 season. He was sidelined last season with an injury, but came back to play in UVU's two WAC Tournament contests in Las Vegas.
     
  • Woodbury was named to the WAC's preseason All-WAC team by both the coaches and media. The Las Vegas native earned All-WAC honors in 2020-21.
     
  • Utah Valley welcomes nine new players to the squad, including three transfers in Cam Alford (John A. Logan College), Tahj Small (Tarleton), and Aziz Bandaogo (Akron).
     
  • Utah Valley was picked to finish seventh by the coaches and eighth by the media in the WAC preseason polls.

Monday night's game at Utah State will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network, which is available at TheMW.com.  The game will also be broadcast over the air waves in Utah County with Jim McCulloch and Jason Erickson on the call. The radio broadcast will be aired live on ESPN 960 AM radio. A live stream of the radio broadcast will also be available at ESPN960sports.com.

ABOUT UTAH STATE
Utah State went 18-16 last season and earned a spot in the National Invitational Tournament where it dropped an 83-72 decision at home to Oregon in the first round. The team finished with an 8-10 mark in Mountain West Conference play. The Aggies return eight letterwinners from last season, including three starters in senior guard Sean Bairstow, senior guard RJ Eytle-Rock, and senior guard Rylan Jones. USU has four newcomers, including three transfers in Dan Akin (California Baptist), forward Taylor Funk (Saint Joseph's), and center Isaac Johnson (Oregon). Utah State was picked to finish eighth in the 11-team Mountain West Conference in the preseason media poll. The Aggies are coached by Ryan Odom who is in his second season with the team.

SERIES HISTORY VS. USU
Utah Valley and Utah State meet on the basketball hardwood for the 14th time on Monday night. The Aggies hold an all-time 13-0 series advantage, including a 7-0 mark in games played in Logan. Monday's game will be the first time the two teams have met since the 2018-19 season. 

LAST MEETING vs. Utah State (Nov. 16, 2018 - Logan, Utah)
LOGAN, Utah— Utah Valley was unable to overcome poor-shooting and costly turnovers in a 65-46 loss on the road against in-state rival Utah State in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Nov. 16, 2018.

Utah State used a 7-0 run to take a 9-3 lead four minutes into the game. After going back and forth, the Wolverines held Utah state scoreless for 5:56 to tie the game at 16 a piece. The Aggies then went on a 14-2 run over the last 5:04 of the half to take a lead 32-20 into intermission.

Conner Toolson led all scorers in the half with nine points and Wyatt Lowell added five points off the bench. Utah Valley was plagued by seven turnovers which resulted in nine points for the Aggies. The Wolverines were also outrebounded 19-26 in the opening half and trailed 8-0 on fast breaks.

WOODBURY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-WAC TEAM
Utah Valley University guard Trey Woodbury has been named to the Preseason All-WAC team by both the coaches and the media, the league office announced on Monday. Utah Valley was picked to finish seventh by the coaches and eighth by the media in the conference preseason poll. 

Woodbury heads into his senior season with the Wolverines this year. He made his way back from a knee injury to make his season debut at the 2022 WAC Tournament where he scored five points with four rebounds in a win over Chicago State in the first round of the tournament. He then scored 10 points with three rebounds and three assists in the quarterfinal loss to Abilene Christian. 

The Las Vegas native earned All-WAC honors in 2020-21 after leading the team in scoring at 15.6 points per game and assists at 3.7 a contest. He also averaged 4.0 rebounds and nearly a steal per game during his junior campaign.  He scored 20 or more points in seven games and dropped in a career-high 34 points in UVU's WAC Tournament game against New Mexico State in 2021. 

UTAH VALLEY PICKED SEVENTH IN PRESEASON COACHES' POLL, EIGHTH IN MEDIA POLL
Utah Valley was selected seventh in the WAC's preseason coaches' poll. The Wolverines received 85 points and were just six points behind Seattle U for the sixth spot. Grand Canyon was picked first in the coaches' poll, followed by NM State in second. Stephen F. Austin was selected third, followed by Abilene Christian fourth, California Baptist fifth, and Seattle U sixth. UVU was seventh, Sam Houston eighth, Southern Utah ninth Tarleton 10th, UT Arlington 11th, Utah Tech 12th, and UTRGV 13th. 

The Wolverines were picked to finish eighth in the WAC's preseason media poll. Grand Canyon was also picked to finish first in the media poll, followed by NM State second, Stephen F. Austin third, Abilene Christian fourth, California Baptist fifth, and Sam Houston and Seattle tied for sixth. UVU was picked eighth, Southern Utah ninth, UT Arlington was picked 10th, Tarleton 11th, Utah Tech 12th, and UTRGV 13th.

NEW FACES
Utah Valley welcomes nine newcomers to the squad, including transfers Tahj Small (Tarleton), Aziz Bandaogo (Akron), and Cam Alford (John A. Logan College).

THREE-POINT STREAKING
Utah Valley has now hit a three-point field goal in 216 straight games. The last time UVU played in a game without hitting a shot from beyond the arc was on Feb. 7, 2015 at Seattle U.

UTAH VALLEY TO PLAY IN JERSEY MIKE'S JAMAICA CLASSIC
Utah Valley announced that it will be competing in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic, Nov. 18-20, at the Montego Bay Convention Center in Montego Bay, Jamaica. 

Set in one of the Caribbean's most beautiful destinations, the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic is a multi-team event that will feature eight top Division I men's college basketball teams, which will take place over three days from Nov. 18-20. Games will be televised and streamed by CBS Sports Network. 

The 2022 Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic will feature eight teams from eight conferences that will go head-to-head in a Round Robin tournament at the Montego Bay Convention Center. The 2022 roster of teams includes Georgetown, Loyola Marymount, Wake Forest, LaSalle, Wisconsin Green Bay, Morgan State, Queens, and Utah Valley. The Wolverines will open the tournament on Nov. 18 against Morgan State. UVU will then play either Queens or Wisconsin Green Bay in the next round on Nov. 20. 

UTAH VALLEY HAS WON 56 OF ITS LAST 71 GAMES AT HOME
UVU holds an impressive 56-15 (79 percent) record at home since a win over Seattle U on March 4, 2017. Utah Valley holds an all-time 206-61 (77.1 percent) record in its 20th season this year at the UCCU Center. The Wolverines are averaging 10.8 wins a season on their home hardwood. UVU finished the 2018-19 season with a school-record 16-1 mark. The team went 14-1 at home during the 2017-18 season and was 6-7 at home in 2019-20. UVU went 8-4 at home in 2020-21 and had an 11-2 mark at home last season.
