RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A day after homering in her dad's first career win as a head coach,
Mikaela Thomson delivered a walk-off single that capped a two-run seventh inning and sent Utah Valley to a 3-2 win over Pacific at the Lynn Russell Miller Classic at UC Riverside on Sunday.
Trailing 2-1 entering their final at-bat, the Wolverines (2-3) rallied after there were two outs with nobody on base to win their final game of the weekend.
Rien Milliken had a pinch-hit single and moved to second on a wild pitch before
Madison Carr singled her home with her third hit of the game.
Linnah Rebolledo kept the line moving with a single to right to move Carr from first to third. Thomson then came through on the first pitch with a base hit into left to score Carr for the winning run.
"This team didn't quit today and that shows me a lot. It was a complete team win. Everyone had a hand in this one today," said Thomson. "Overall, we saw a lot of good things this weekend. A lot of good at-bats, especially when we haven't been to get outside a lot, to some really quality innings out of some pitchers. We're going to continue to work and look forward to getting back out there next weekend in Las Vegas."
The Wolverines trailed 2-0 after the Tigers (1-3) got both of their runs in the top of the fourth.
Jaeden Barajas got Utah Valley on the board with a solo home run down the line in left with one out in the fifth.
Brooke Carter and
Katie Zuniga combined to allow just four hits in the game with one of the two runs coming in unearned in the fourth. Zuniga pitched three scoreless innings, retiring eight of the 10 batters she faced to pick up her second win of the weekend.
Earlier in the day, the Wolverines dropped an 8-2 contest to Portland State. UVU trailed 3-2 in the fifth before the Vikings pushed five runs across the plate to pull away.
After Portland State scored three times in the bottom of the first, Utah Valley scored twice in the second.
Megan Gibbs, who was 2-for-2 in the game, doubled to lead off the inning,
Kyla Hardy singled and Milliken walked to load the bases. Barajas drove in Gibbs on a hit into right-center and
Jordan Freas RBI groundout allowed Milliken to score to second run.
The Wolverines head to Las Vegas next weekend for the UNLV Desert Classic where they'll face Weber State one time and both Kansas City and UNLV two times each.
