UVU, DSU meet Saturday in Old Hammer Rivalry

OPENING TIP
  • Utah Valley University takes its three-game winning streak into a Saturday afternoon contest against Dixie State University at 2 p.m. MT in Lockhart Arena. The game pits the in-state foes against each other in the Old Hammer Rivalry and can be seen live on ESPN+.
  • Maria Carvalho's 22-point effort on Wednesday has her in position to become the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She enters Saturday's game nine points away from the mark and would become the second UVU player this month to reach it. Josie Williams surpassed 1,000 points on Feb. 3 against Stephen F. Austin.
  • Saturday's game will the 100th career contest for Williams. Carvalho is right behind her at 99, which have all been starts. Madison Grange recently surpassed 100 games played in her career and is the active leader at 102.
  • Williams leads UVU with 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. She's tied for fourth in the country in rebounds per game while her 18 double-doubles is also tied for fourth. The double-doubles also ranks second in UVU's single-season record book, two behind the record held by Sam Jensen from 2012-13.
  • Utah Valley is currently in fifth in the WAC standings and with a win on Saturday would move into a tie for fourth with Abilene Christian. The top six postseason eligible teams will all receive at least a first-round bye at the WAC Tournament in March, while seeds 7-10 will play in the first round on Tuesday, March 8.
     

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley University ran away from Tarleton, 75-53, on Wednesday Night inside Lockhart Arena to win their third straight contest in WAC play. The Wolverines shot 52.6% from the field and never trailed against the Texans.

Utah Valley was led by Carvalho, who had 22 points on the night to go along with five rebounds and four assists and also hit all four of her attempts from three. Williams had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Madison Grange dished out a career-high eight assists. Megan Jensen added 11 points and six boards for the Wolverines, who outrebounded the Texans 36-25. Tahlia White scored nine points and Grange finished with eight to go along with her career night in assists.

COMING UP
UVU will embark on its final road trip of the WAC regular season next week. The Wolverines will play at Seattle U on Thursday, Feb. 24 and at California Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 26.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Dixie State is 7-16 overall and 4-9 in WAC play after Thursday's 72-69 win over New Mexico State. Emily Isaacson hit the game-winning 3-pointer with just seconds to go. She hit seven 3-pointers in the game — including two in the final minute — and leads the WAC with 69 made on the season. The Wolverines held off the Trailblazers on Jan. 17 in the first meeting between the teams. UVU withstood a 17-0 run by Dixie State in the fourth quarter to win in St. George.

It was the first meeting between the teams with the former junior college rivals competing at the NCAA Division I level. UVU is 4-0 against Dixie State since moving to NCAA DI in 2003-04 with the first three meetings coming with Dixie as members of NCAA Division II.
