ST. GEORGE, Utah — Brooke Carter went the distance and struck out 10 as Utah Valley University won its second straight contest over Nevada, 7-3, in a tournament at Dixie State on Saturday. The Wolverines dropped the second game of the day, 9-1, to Winthrop in six innings.
After coming from behind the win a wild nine-inning contest on Friday, 14-13, the Wolverines (3-3) scored the first five runs and then added some insurance late behind Carter, who picked up her second win in as many appearances.
The Wolverines jumped ahead early with two in the top of the first. After
Linnah Rebolledo singled with one out,
Kalena Shepherd's hard-hit shot ricocheted off the glove of the first baseman and into right-center, allowing Rebolledo to score from first on the RBI single.
Mikaela Thomson doubled and
Jaeden Barajas later singled her home with an infield hit to make it 2-0.
Carter retired six of the first seven batters she faced with four coming on strikeouts. She worked around a walk and a single in the third to retire all three outs via the strikeout and had seven through three innings.
Thomson and Barajas factored into a two-run third for Utah Valley, with both driving in runs with RBI base hits. The Wolf Pack (2-13) put a dent in the score in the fifth when Aaliyah Jenkins hit a three-run home run, but that's all Carter would allow.
Rebolledo drove in
Kyla Hardy with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and
Megan Gibbs hit her fifth home run of the season — and third in the last two games — to lead off the seventh.
Against Winthrop, a pair of home runs helped the Eagles (2-11) jump to a 5-0 lead midway through the third inning. UVU's lone run came in the third on a sacrifice fly from Rebolledo. Bella Roy limited UVU to just one run on five hits while striking out six. Utah Valley will close out the weekend with a Sunday contest against Winthrop at 10 a.m. MT.
