RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Josie Williams scored a career-high 31 points, but Utah Valley University couldn't keep up with California Baptist and dropped an 84-59 contest on Saturday at the CBU Events Center.
Williams set a new career scoring mark for the second straight game after finishing with 28 points and 16 rebounds in Thursday's win at Seattle U. She was 12-for-16 from the field in 29 minutes, and at one point made eight straight attempts from the floor for the Wolverines (14-13, 9-7) who saw their five-game win streak snapped.
The Lancers (20-7, 11-5) got 29 from Caitlyn Harper, who was also 12-of-16 from the floor, while Trinity San Antonio added 16 points and 11 rebounds. CBU outrebounded Utah Valley, 41-29 with 14 on the offensive glass accounting for 15 second chance points.
The league's top two scorers, Harper and Williams, both got their teams going early. Harper scored the first six for CBU while Williams matched her with six of the first nine for UVU. Georgia Dale hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first for the Lancers, who scored nine second chance points behind six offensive rebounds. Down eight, 19-11, the Wolverines closed to within four by the end of one, 21-17, with Williams scoring 10.
Utah Valley went cold in the second, missing their first seven shots of the quarter while California Baptist hit four of its first six to take a 33-17 lead. Harper scored the first nine points of the Lancer run before Nicole Avila-Ambrosi hit a 3-pointer.
Madison Grange ended a drought that lasted over minutes with a baseline jumper, but the Wolverines were outscored 20-5 in the quarter and trailed 41-22 at the break.
Williams had 13 of UVU's 22 points at halftime while Harper scored 17 and Dale had 11 with CBU outscoring the Wolverines 22-10 in the paint.
Williams offensive success continued in the third, but the Wolverines couldn't string the needed stops together to chip away at the lead. Williams scored 12 points in just over five minutes, but Utah Valley still trailed 56-36 at the quarter's media timeout. Williams finished with 16 points in the quarter, making all seven of her attempts from the field, and had 29 after three. Still, Utah Valley trailed 65-42 entering the fourth.
The Wolverines close out the WAC regular season next week a home. UVU hosts Grand Canyon on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT and New Mexico State on Saturday at noon MT in the UCCU Center.
