Softball travels to Colorado for busy weekend

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University heads to Colorado this week with eight games on the schedule over four days starting with a Thursday doubleheader at Northern Colorado. The Wolverines (5-5) will also be part of the Colorado Classic, which has seen some schedule alterations due to impending weather.

On Friday, UVU is slated to face Big 10 Wisconsin at Colorado State at 10 a.m. before another game at Northern Colorado that afternoon at 2 p.m. On Saturday, UVU and Colorado State are scheduled for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. MT. The weekend wraps up on Sunday with games against Saint Mary's (10 a.m.) and Colorado State (12:30 p.m.) in Fort Collins. The weekend weather forecast looks good for Thursday and Friday with much cooler temperatures and possible snow on Saturday and Sunday, which could force more schedule changes.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley went 3-2 in a tournament hosted by Dixie State last weekend with two wins over Nevada and one over Winthrop. After opening the weekend with a one-run loss to Weber State, the Wolverines were trailing 9-3 against Nevada before coming all the way back to force extra innings and eventually win a wild, 14-13 contest in nine innings. Megan Gibbs homered twice in the game and Mikaela Thomson delivered a walk-off single to win it.

Brooke Carter, who was the winning pitcher in all three victories, followed up the extra-inning win with a 10 strikeout performance in a 7-3 win over Nevada on Saturday. After falling to Winthrop later that day, the Wolverines rebounded on Sunday with an 8-0 shutout of Winthrop. Carter allowed just two hits in the complete-game win, Gibbs hit her fourth home run of the weekend and sixth of the season, and Thomson hit a grand slam en route to the run-rule victory.

FRESHMAN SLUGGER AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
Gibbs' six home runs through the first 10 games of her college career has her among the national leaders in home runs per game. The redshirt freshman enters the week in third in that category and 17th in overall home runs, despite UVU losing five games to COVID-19 protocols two weekends ago in Las Vegas.

UP NEXT
Utah Valley will be off next week before opening the home schedule with a doubleheader against Maine on March 16 beginning at 12:30 p.m. MT. WAC play begins that weekend at Dixie State with a doubleheader on March 18 and single game on March 19.
