Thomson homers twice but Wolverines fall at USU

LOGAN, Utah — Mikaela Thomson homered twice but Utah Valley couldn't overcome a trio of errors in an 8-3 loss at Utah State on Wednesday. The multi-home run game was the Wolverines' (10-11) second of the season and the third of Thomson's college career. Megan Gibbs also hit two home runs earlier this season in a win over Nevada.

The Aggies (13-15) got a pair of two-out hits in the first, including a two-run home run from Lexi Orozco, to take an early 2-0 lead. UVU remained scoreless until the fourth when Thomson hit her fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to right-center, to make it a 2-1 contest.

Utah State answered with four in the fourth, capitalizing on a pair of errors and four walks in the inning. With runners at second and third and one nobody out, two runs came in on a sacrifice bunt by Claudia Medina. The first run scored on the bunt before a second run came in when the throw to the plate got away. Libbie Hawker followed with a double that drove in Medina to give USU a 5-1 lead. Orozco drove in the fourth run when she popped up just behind first base in foul territory and Mazie MacFarlane socred with some savvy baserunning from third.. The Aggies scored the four runs on just one hit in the inning.

Utah State added two more in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead and were just inches from ending the game early, but Linnah Rebolledo threw out Mazie MacFarlane, who was ruled out of the baseline as Jaeden Barajas went to apply the tag, to end the inning.

Thomson's second home run came in the top of the sixth and was a line shot to right-center that followed a leadoff walk to Rebolledo to start the inning. Madison Carr, Thomson and Rylee Thorpe each had two-hit games for the Wolveines, who finished with nine hits.

The Wolverines return to WAC play on Friday with a doubleheader against defending tournament champions and West Division favorites Seattle University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MT with the finale of the three-game series on Saturday at noon from Wolverine Field in Orem.
