Wolverines drop finale as Seattle offense has big day

OREM, Utah — Seattle U had a big day at the plate en route to a 16-7 win over Utah Valley on Saturday to win the rubber match of the three-game WAC series.

Madison Carr had two hits and scored two runs while Kalena Shepherd and Mikaela Thomson drove in two runs each for the Wolverines (11-13, 2-4). The Redhawks (18-14, 4-2) finished with a school-record 25 hits in the game, with six different players collecting at least three hits each. Tai Wilson finished 4-for-5 while Brooke Milder drove in four runs as the 16 runs scored also set a Seattle U record.

The Redhawks scored five in the top of the third, with four of the six hits in the inning going for extra bases. The Wolverines got right back into the game with four in the bottom of the inning. Carr had an RBI single, Rebolledo doubled a run home and Shepherd also had an RBI single in the inning. Both teams took advantage of errors in the third, with six of the 11 combined runs coming in unearned.

The Redhawks kept their offense going, scoring two more in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Down 9-4, Utah Valley got two in the bottom of the fifth to chip away at the deficit. Shepherd had a sacrifice fly and Thomson an RBI double, but the Wolverines stranded the bases full.

After Seattle's two-run sixth, UVU trailed 11-6 before the Redhawks put up their second five-run inning. Utah Valley's final run came after three straight hits after there were two outs and nobody on in the seventh. Karleigh Olsen and Jordan Freas had back-to-back pinch-hit singles before Victoria Vasquez drove in Olsen with a base hit.

The Wolverines will hit the road next week for four games starting Tuesday at Utah. UVU will also travel to New Mexico State for a three-game WAC series next Friday and Saturday. Utah Valley and Seattle U will also meet against in a three-game series on April 29-30 in Seattle.
