Shosted ties for third, Estrada sixth at Bobcat Desert Classic

Leighton Shosted recorded her fourth top-five finish of the season by tying for third with a 5-over-par 221, while Victoria Estrada tied for sixth with a 9-over-par 225 to lead the way for Utah Valley.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – A pair of Wolverines posted top-10 finishes on Tuesday, as Leighton Shosted tied for third and Victoria Estrada tied for sixth to help lead Utah Valley University women's golf to a sixth place finish out of 11 teams at the Bobcat Desert Classic at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona.

Shosted fired a three-round 5-over-par 221 to record her fourth top-five finish on the season, while Estrada tallied her third top-10 finish after carding a 9-over-par 225. Shosted carded rounds of 72, 75, and 74 over the two-day event to finish in a tie for third place at 5-over, while the 2021 WAC individual champion Estrada put up scores of 70, 79, and 76 on her way to tying for sixth. The freshman Shosted also paced the Wolverines at the event in both birdies with six and pars with 38.

"Leighton had a great tournament. The course played tough at times in the wind and she stayed steady to secure top three finish. Her short game came through for sure. We're looking forward to her rolling it next week," head UVU coach Juli Erekson said. "Victoria also had a great finish despite her not having her "A" game."

As a team, UVU finished sixth out of 11 squads with a 63-over-par 927. The Wolverines opened with rounds of 301 and 315 on Monday, and followed that up with a 23-over 311 on Tuesday to finish in sixth place. Santa Clara won Montana State's Bobcat Desert Classic with a 28-over-par 892 (294-298-300), while Northern Arizona took second at 38-over, and in-state foe Southern Utah placed third at 45-over. By taking sixth, UVU finished ahead of the host Montana State Bobcats (946), in-state and WAC foe Dixie State (946), Eastern Washington (946), Idaho State (949), and Northern Colorado (950).

Behind Shosted and Estrada, Bailey Henley was next for UVU by tying for 37th with a 24-over-par 240 (78-82-80). Anna Lesa followed by placing 40th (81-79-81—241) and Caylyn Ponich rounded out Utah Valley's competitors by taking 52nd (83-82-84—249).

"The girls managed their emotions well today when it wasn't going how they expected and we haven't been able to get off to a good start or finish yet. They fought to pull together their rounds despite their starts and finishes. We're focusing on what we can control and how to minimize those mistakes for next week," added Erekson.

SCU's Claire Choi claimed medalist honors at the event with a 2-under-par 214 (68-72-74).

The Bobcat Desert Classic marked UVU's final regular-season event of the 2021-22 campaign and final tune-up prior to the 2022 WAC Women's Golf Championship.

The WAC Championships will be held next week, April 18-20, at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas. A season ago, UVU finished fourth at the conference championship and Estrada became the program's first WAC champion en route to earning UVU's inaugural NCAA Regional appearance.

"Not the best finish we were hoping for but we know what we need to do to put us in the mix next week. We just need to go out and do it," Erekson concluded.
