OREM, Utah — Utah Valley swept both ends of a doubleheader, 7-6 and 14-0, over Dixie State in the first two games of a WAC series on a windy Thursday afternoon. The Wolverines (18-18, 9-8) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game one before an eight-run first inning put the game out of reach early while
Brooke Carter tossed a four-hit shutout. The win assured the Wolverines of a series win, and at least a season split against the Trailblazers in the Old Hammer Rivalry between the in-state foes.
Rylee Thorpe had her second walk-off hit in as many weekends while
Madison Carr had three hits in each game, going 6-for-7 over the course of the twin bill while extending her school-record on-base streak to 30 straight games.
Linnah Rebolledo had three hits in the first game and made two web gems in the second game, throwing out a runner at the plate to end one inning and later retiring a batter on a diving play in foul territory down the left field line. In game two,
Kalena Shepherd went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs.
"It was great to see us win two games in two completely different ways. We maybe weren't as crisp in the first game but to come back and get that win shows the resolve this team has," said UVU head coach
Cody Thomson. "We were able to ride that momentum into the second game and really never let off the brakes."
Game 1
Thorpe's two-out, walk-off single scored Rebolledo from second to cap the come-from-behind win in game one. The Wolverines trailed 6-4 entering the seventh before
Laynee Betancur lofted a triple down the line in left and Carr doubled her home with a perfectly placed hit, again down the line in left. Rebolledo doubled home Carr with a liner past first base to tie the game at 6-6. Two batters later, Thorpe delivered on a 1-1 pitch and the throw home was wide, allowing Rebolledo to score.
After Dixie State picked up a run in the top of the first, Utah Valley evened things up in the bottom half of the inning after
Mikaela Thomson lined a sacrifice fly to right field to score Carr from third to tie the game at 1-1 after one inning of play.
The Wolverines held DSU scoreless in the top of the second inning and then went to work in the bottom of the second. Carr hit an RBI single that sent
Jaeden Barajas across the plate. Carr and Gibbs then executed a perfect double steak, with Gibbs scoring give Utah Valley a 3-1 lead after two complete innings.
The Trailblazers took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning with four runs to jump out to a 5-3 advantage. Utah Valley got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Rebolledo, but Dixie State got that run back in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
Katie Zuniga picked up the win in the circle as she went the distance for her eighth win of the season. Zuniga recorded two strikeouts in the win. Carr was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk, and a pair of RBIs while Betancur went 2-for-3 with the triple and a run scored.
Game 2
The Wolverines sent 13 hitters to the plate and took advantage of two Dixie State errors to seize control of the second game early. UVU had eight hits in the inning, two coming from Carr, while six different players drove in runs including one on a double from Thomson.
Another error in the second allowed two more runs to score, with
Karleigh Olsen and Betancur both driving in runs in the inning. UVU scored two runs again in both the third and fourth, with Shepherd's home run leading off the third and Barajas later driving in a run. Shepherd drove in both runs in the fourth on a double that was only kept in the park due to the strong wind.
The teams are slated to play on Friday at noon in the series finale. Rain is expected in the forecast, which could alter the schedule for the finale.
