SALT LAKE CITY — Rylee Thorpe hit a two-run home run for Utah Valley University, but a pair of two-run homers in the sixth inning sent the University of Utah to a 4-2 win on Monday in Salt Lake City.
The Wolverines threatened in each of the first three innings but didn't score until Thorpe's two-run blast in the fourth.
Kalena Shepherd led off the inning with a double before Thorpe hit the first pitch of her at-bat over the wall in left for her second home run of the season.
UVU starter
Brooke Carter was sharp early. Through three innings she had pitched to the minimum thanks to a double play in the second and
Jaeden Barajas gunning down a would-be base-stealer to end the third.
After Thorpe's home run in the fourth, Carter retired the Utes on just four pitches in the bottom of the inning, which included a one-out single by Ellessa Bonstrom. In Utah's half of the fifth, there were runners on second and third with two outs, but Carter got Elicia Espinosa looking on the ninth pitch of the at-bat to end the threat and keep the score at 2-0.
Julia Jimenez tied the game in the sixth with the first two-run home run, before Destiny White gave the Utes a 4-2 lead with her own two-run homer with two outs in the inning.
Madison Carr, who leads the WAC in batting average and hits, saw her school-record on-base streak end at an impressive 31 straight games. She was 0-for-3 and robbed of a base hit by left fielder Shelbi Ortiz on a diving play in the fifth.
The Wolverines will now host Utah State on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. before heading to Seattle for a key WAC series against Seattle U this weekend.
