HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Utah Valley saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion as Ramsey Lopez hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to send New Mexico State to a 5-4 win on Thursday.
Madison Carr and
Linnah Rebolledo, who were both named to the All-WAC first team on Monday, had two-hit games for the Wolverines (24-27). Carr finished her career with one of the best offensive seasons in program history, shattering a school record with 82 hits and batting .456, which is also a program record for players with at least 100 at-bats. Carr also stole 27 bases which is one shy of the single-season school record. Rebolledo set a new school record with 50 runs scored while
Mikaela Thomson had the second-most home runs (12) and RBIs (50) in a single season for a UVU player.
In Thursday's game — Utah Valley's second game of the day — Kayla Bowen got New Mexico State on the board with a two-run home run to left in the first inning.
Laynee Betancur got one of those runs back in the second with an RBI base hit into left-center that plated pinch-runner
Brynne Hilton.
Kalena Shepherd then tied it in the third, doubling home Thomson, who singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch.
The Aggies took the lead in the third after loading the bases with nobody out. Bowen had an RBI single to make it 3-2, but
Katie Zuniga got a strikeout and two groundouts to limit the damage to just one run.
Utah Valley tied it again the third after Carr singled and moved to second on an throwing error, and then scored when Rebolledo drove her in on a line drive that ricocheted off the glove of the diving shortstop. Rebolledo hustled into second with a double and Carr scored to make it 3-3.
The Wolverines took their first lead in the fifth, scoring a single run for the fourth straight inning when
Megan Gibbs came through with a pinch-hit double that scored
Jordan Freas. Freas singled to center to begin the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Danyé Albritton.
Zuniga got through the heart of the NM State order in the bottom half of the inning, thanks in part to the glove of
Peyton Prigge at third. Prigge had all three assists in the inning, including when she stabbed a one-hopper on a diving play to her right and threw from her knees at first, where Thomson dug it out to retire Bowen.
The Aggies tied it in the sixth with an RBI groundout from Madison Muxen before Lopez hit her WAC-leading 17th home run of the season to end it.
